If you have been only a casual viewer of the two Frozen films, hearing a question like- will Elsa be gay in the next movie? Will make your eyebrows shoot up to the top of your forehead.
But it’s a question that is based on some solid theories. After all, back in 2016, the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend trended for days.
So, will she get a girlfriend?
Disney hasn’t officially confirmed if Elsa will be gay in Frozen 3 or 4. Fans think she and Honeymaren could be a couple in the next film because of their chemistry and close bond. However, others believe that Disney won’t jeopardize the box office of one of their most successful franchises with such a controversial decision.
Will There Be A Frozen 4?
Disney boss Bob Iger revealed on Good Morning America (via IGN) that Frozen 4 was already in the works along with Frozen 3. He shocked everyone by saying:
“Frozen 3 is in the works, and there might be a Frozen 4 in the works too. But I don’t have much to say about those films right now. But Jen Lee, who created the original Frozen and Frozen 2, is hard at work with her team at Disney animation on not one but actually two stories.”
This news came as a shock to many because Frozen 3 was only announced back in February 2023. However, the announcement makes sense. After all, it is one of the most successful franchises of the House of Mouse.
This announcement has reignited conversations about Elsa being gay. After all, with two films guaranteed to be made (for now), they will have a lot of time to flesh out Elsa’s sexuality.
Why Do People Think Elsa Is Gay?
None of the two Frozen films that have been produced and released till now have confirmed the sexuality of Elsa. However, many people from the LGBTQ community do identify with the character because of the journey she undergoes in the movies.
This is because Elsa’s goal doesn’t end with finding a Prince, and she doesn’t conform to social norms. Moreover, the ice princess goes on a journey of self-acceptance.
Many have theorized that Honeymaren, a member of the Northuldra tribe introduced in Frozen 2, could be Elsa’s future girlfriend.
After Elsa tames Bruni, the fire spirit, Honeymaren tells her what the embroidery on Iduna’s scarf means. The four crystal branches represent the four elements, and Elsa is the fifth elemental spirit that the legends speak of.
This foreshadowing by Honeymaren works, and Elsa finds out that she’s the fifth spirit. So she realizes her place is with nature and abdicates Arendelle’s throne to live in the Enchanted Forest.
Since Honeymaren and her Northuldra tribe live there and value nature/ spirits, Elsa may live with them. Also, the characters bonded over their shared love of nature and Northuldra heritage.
In a way, Honeymaren acts as Elsa’s guide. It’s quite similar to how Kristoff acts as Anna’s guide. Apart from the story arc, many have stated that the characters share great chemistry, which could be explored in subsequent films.
The two also share an instant connection, which is surprising because Elsa has always maintained her distance from people for fear of hurting them with her magic.
Why People Don’t Want Elsa To Be Gay?
Not everyone is on board with Elsa being gay. Some want her to stay single because not every main character needs a love interest. On the Frozen subreddit, user Yohixah said:
“I hope they keep her single. I think it sends a message that it is OK not to have your story defined by your romantic life. It also allows different ships to coexist.”
Another user, VarianRydell, said the film would have to be convincing with a relationship for Elsa. They wrote:
“If Elsa has a love interest, it would need to be convincing and extremely well-written, given that:
- She has spent so much time isolating herself and clearly has some social anxiety issues
- She delivered the iconic line about not marrying someone you just met, lol.
The whole movie would have to center around that relationship to be convincing, in my opinion.”
Will Disney Make Elsa Gay In Frozen 3?
However, realistically, it doesn’t look like Elsa will be announced as gay anytime soon. As user LockAndKey989 on the Frozen subreddit summarized perfectly:
“Let’s be honest, Honeymaren isn’t gonna happen. Disney isn’t ready for THAT big of a leap yet, and if they were, they certainly wouldn’t want to risk one of their best franchises.”
No matter which side of the debate you fall on, it doesn’t look like Disney will commit to a decision that will surely be controversial across various countries and can hamper the box office of the third film.
What do you think of Elsa’s sexuality? Do you think that she might be gay? Should Disney commit to this in the third Frozen film?
