The 2024 United States presidential elections are not far off, with just a little over a year until we see the new winner chosen by the American voters.
With several formidable candidates aiming for the position, including Ramaswamy, DeSantis, Haley, Donald Trump, and many others, it has been the center of people’s attention worldwide.
The Republican Party’s leading candidate and front-runner, Donald Trump, has stated that he won’t be attending the first GOP televised presidential debate in Milwaukee via a post on Truth Social. Seeing the former president make such a frantic decision, evidently, not everyone is happy.
Why Is Donald Trump Skipping the Presidential Debate?
Although the decision seems like something personal, it is very strategic, and as various sources briefed on the situation, Trump is intent on starving the other Republican candidates of attention.
In the past, Trump has achieved immense popularity through television appearances, and while he can still show up in the presidential debate, he said in the post that there is no need for that due to his astonishing lead in the polls. In his words,
“Many people are asking whether or not I will be doing the DEBATES. ALL AMERICANS have been clamoring for a President of extremely High Intelligence. As everyone is aware, my Poll numbers over a ‘wonderful’ field of Republican candidates are extraordinary. In fact, I am leading the runner-up, whoever that may now be, by more than 50 Points.”
By further pointing out the previous incidents, such as in 1980 when Ronald Reagan skipped a televised presidential debate for a similar reason, he added,
“The public knows who I am & what a successful Presidency I had. I will, therefore, not be doing the debates. Reagan didn’t do it, and neither did others. People know my Record, one of the BEST EVER, so why would I Debate? I’M YOUR MAN. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
While it certainly seems like a valid reason for Trump skipping the debate, he also mentioned that a part of the reason was to humiliate Fox News, which he was displeased with their recent coverage. It is evident that Trump has been openly attacking Fox News since the beginning of his presidential campaign and their favorable coverage of Ron DeSantis, who is second in terms of the polls.
However, the decision was backed by many of his private aides and rally crowds as he constantly asked them, and the responses majorly indicated him to skip the debate.
Furthermore, Trump is also preparing to do an interview with the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, but only a few details were revealed regarding it. Nonetheless, Trump not attending the presidential debate would only result in other candidates focusing on taking down DeSantis since he is the leading candidate of all the attendees.
However, things are not looking good for Trump as well since Fulton County of Georgia has issued a deadline for Trump to surrender himself as he was charged with a fourth criminal indictment. People have responded in favor of Trump after this unexpected turn of events by tweeting on X (formerly Twitter) about how it is unjust to charge him.
Despite Trump not attending the presidential debate, it looks like it will garner a lot of attention, at least to see how Fox News and the rest of the attendees handle the situation. What is your take on Trump’s decision?
Do you think he made the right choice by skipping the debate?
