Opening the explore and trending tab on Twitter/ X will make you encounter the topics users mostly tweet about. From sports to MCU films and more, it’s mostly the expected trends. But sometimes, an eyebrow-raising phrase takes the top spot.
BLACKPINK and BTS are the two groups that dominate the K-pop side of Twitter/ X. Almost every day, tweets about these two groups mainly gain traction and attention on social media sites. Recently, a curious hashtag was trending- #ApologizetoLisa. But why?
BLACKPINK fans are trending Apologize to Lisa on Twitter/ X because New Jeans Global, the account of a rising K-pop girl group, made derogatory comments beneath a post of Lisa. The account said, “She looks terrible,” beneath a post meant to admire Lisa’s looks. This triggered the trend where fans demanded that the admins apologize. New Jeans Global claimed they had been hacked, but fans didn’t buy that. They subsequently issued an apology.
Why Is ‘Apologize to Lisa’ Trending Worldwide?
BLACKPINK is arguably the most famous K-pop girl group in the world. Lisa, their star singer, enjoys a global fanbase who are do-or-die for her, and they came out in droves to defend her once again by trending Apologize to Lisa on Twitter/ X globally. The trend garnered more than 500k posts and tweets.
This began when an account called Pop Crave posted on social media:
“New snapshots reveal the stunning allure of Blackpink’s Lisa.”
The post was meant to invite adoration and admiration for Lisa’s looks. Initially, things were going well, but one comment from New Jeans Global, another rising K-pop girl group, spoiled it all. They tweeted a statement that was in poor taste and borderline derogatory. The account said: “She looks terrible.” This made all hell break loose.
Since the comment came from the handle of another K-pop girl group trying to establish itself in the world, it triggered a massive backlash. BLACKPINK and Lisa’s fans trended Apologize to Lisa as a response, and it gained worldwide traction, drawing the eyes of users who aren’t even interested in K-pop much.
New Jeans Global later clarified their tweet by saying that their account was compromised. They said:
“Our account was hacked earlier, resulting in the dissemination of distressing and provocative content without the consent of any of our administrators. The objectionable posts were promptly removed, and we have successfully fortified our account’s security by changing the password.”
But fans weren’t satisfied with this. They wanted a proper apology. In fact, the New Jeans Global account not giving a proper apology aggravated the situation further. However, they finally succumbed to the pressure and did issue proper apologies to Lisa and the fanbase.
The situation has died down a little as Lisa and BLACKPINK fans have moved on or are moving from the fiasco and focusing on supporting their star. Many have claimed that the comment was an attempt by the social media team of New Jeans to gain more traction for their rising band. Others think that it was because an admin of the account hated Lisa and BLACKPINK
This isn’t the first time the hashtag Apologize to Lisa has trended worldwide. Back in 2022, BLINKS demanded that Spotify issue an apology to Lisa after they mistakenly crowned BTS’ Jungkook as the K-pop soloist with the most streamed songs of the year when it was actually the BLACKPINK singer who got that title.
Spotify addressed their mistake and claimed the error was made because their genre tags were merged correctly.
