The Super Bowl is almost a religion in the USA for many. Over the years, there have been many famous personalities who have changed the face of the game. But there hasn’t been anyone quite like Norma Hunt. The teacher by trade and football fan by passion loved the sport dearly with her husband, Lamar Hunt.
She was such an ardent supporter of the game, as well as of the Kansas Chiefs, that she attended every Super Bowl till now. It’s a feat that’s eyebrow-raising impressive. In fact, as per a famous story, Hunt contributed to the naming of the Super Bowl as well. But today, she’s not here anymore.
Norma Hunt, known for attending every Super Bowl till now, passed away at 85 years of age. The cause of death hasn’t been disclosed as of yet. She was the wife of Lamar Hunt, the founder of the Kansas City Chiefs. Hunt had been with the team since its beginning when they were known as the Dallas Texans.
Who Is Norma Hunt?
Norma Hunt was the second wife of Kansas City Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt. She is well-known for having attended every single Super Bowl. Hunt married the sports magnate in 1964, and they were together till his demise in December 2006. She was a teacher in her early life and worked for the team back when they were called the Dallas Texans.
Over 57 years, Hunt attended three Super Bowl wins for the Kansas City Chiefs. These were Super Bowl IV, Super Bowl LIV, and Super Bowl LVII against the Vikings, 49ers, and Eagles, respectively. But this isn’t all that Hunt has done for the game. According to a well-known story, she played a role in naming the game itself.
It’s said that once she was purchasing Super Balls to give as gifts to her children, and that was also the time pro football owners were looking forward to renaming the then-called AFL-NFL World Championship Game. The story goes that Norma suggested at a league meeting that the game be called the ‘Super Bowl.’
Norma and Lamar have two sons- Daniel and Clark Hunt. Clark is the co-owner and chairman of the Chiefs. Lamar Hunt passed away in 2006.
What Happened to Norma Hunt?
The Hunt family has announced in a statement that Norma Hunt is no more. The cause of death hasn’t been given yet. She was 85 years old. The statement from the Hunts read:
“Kind, generous, and unfailingly positive, Mom was one of a kind. Her joy and zeal for life were infectious. She loved caring for others, and she always had an encouraging word. She was a loyal friend, the consummate hostess, and she had a rare ability to make everyone she encountered feel valued and at ease.”
The family further thanked her for her contributions to the team and the Super Bowl. The statement further said:
“Mom was steadfastly devoted to her family and fiercely passionate about her family’s sports teams. She was by our father Lamar’s side every step of the way — from the merger of the AFL and the NFL to the formation of Major League Soccer, World Championship Tennis, the North American Soccer League, and their founding investment in the Chicago Bulls. She was the only person we knew who rivaled his love of sports. The two of them found such joy together, whether at home or in the stadium stands around the world.”
Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback of the Chiefs, had grown closer to her over the years and expressed his sadness over her passing:
“Mrs. Norma was the best. Glad to be a part of this special organization she helped build. She will be missed!”
Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, also reminisced about Hunt and complimented her passion and love for the game. He said:
“Norma’s sense of family extended to the Chiefs’ organization which she greatly adored. Norma was one of the most passionate fans of the Chiefs and the NFL and understood and enjoyed every aspect of the game. She loved being around the team and referred to the players as ‘real-life superheroes.’ Norma attended every Super Bowl ever played, including the two recent Chiefs’ victories, and was the only woman to do so.”
Kansas Chiefs are yet to announce details for Sunday night memorial.
