GMA Network announced the loss of its precious member, Mike Enriquez, in an official statement–
“It is with profound sadness that GMA Network announces the passing of our beloved Kapuso, Mr. Miguel ‘Mike’ C. Enriquez, who peacefully joined our Creator on August 29, 2023.”
“His dedication to the industry will serve as an inspiration to all.”
Mr. Enriquez is an influential figure in Philipines media, with over 50 years of dedication to journalism. But on August 29, the celebrated GMA News anchor suffered a cardiac arrest at 72.
Who Is Mike Enriquez?
Although Mr. Enriquez has reached the highest milestones in broadcasting media, he came from humble, nay, accidental beginnings. One day, he visited his former high school friend at the Manila Broadcasting Company in 1969.
His friend introduced him to the manager as a potential employee. Previously working as a disc jockey, this accidental encounter opened the gates of broadcasting and journalism for him. Soon, he was hired in a managerial position at the radio network.
Through his enigmatic personality, Enriquez managed to become the vice president of the Radio Mindanao Network (RMN).
He was then recruited by the GMA Network to lead its radio division and expansion in 1995. Once he established his foothold in the network, he soon ventured into television broadcasting. He made his first on-air appearance as an anchor in 1998. His election coverage with broadcast journalist Karen Davila was praised nationwide.
After this exposure, there was no stopping for Mr. Enriquez as he hosted TV shows, including Saksi: GMA Headline Balita, GMA Network News, Saksi, Imbestigador, and 24 Oras.
Mr. Enriquez earned executive positions, such as managing GMA’s radio operations as the consultant of the radio operations group and president of Radio GMA Network Inc. (RGMA).
Why Is Mike Enriquez Famous?
Mike Enriques became an influential journalist in the Philipines due to his stellar coverage of political, humanitarian, environmental, and social issues.
He received recognition and accolades for his work, including–
- Most Outstanding Male News Anchor in 2022 by the Gawad Lasallianeta Awards.
- Most Trusted Radio Presenter in the 23rd Annual Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands Awards.
- Best Male Newscaster at the 1999 Golden Dove Award.
- Broadcaster of the Year at the 1999 Ka Doroy Valencia Award.
- Best Newscaster in the Asian Television Awards in Singapore in 1999.
- Gold medal at the New York Festival in 2003 for Saksi.
- Silver Camera Award for a war-torn Iraq documentary at the 2004 US Film and Video Festival.
His genuine conduct and unbiased reporting won him praise, and he was beloved among people.
What Happened to Mike Enriquez?
Mike Enriques had several health complications over the years. He first underwent a kidney transplant in December 2021, where doctors advised him to take a 3-month sabbatical for recovery.
But Mr. Mike was truly dedicated to his craft as he wanted to fulfill his duty of covering the 2022 elections. As a result, he went back on air in March 2022. Since he was not completely healed yet, he went on an isolation period for three months after the elections.
In 2018, he also had a heart bypass. And in the same year, he was getting regular treatments for kidney disorders. Mr. Enriquez was also battling diabetes all this while.
And now, at the old age of 72, he suffered a cardiac arrest. But he will remain in the hearts, remembered for his admirable journalism.
