One father’s sacrifice becomes an invaluable gift for the fathers of several children!
It was the Fourth of July when the entire America was celebrating. One such celebration turned into a tragic incident when a man drowned trying to save the lives of several children. Here are the complete details of the heroic tale as we pay tribute to the selfless man–
What Happened to Luke Laidley?
People all over America were celebrating the national holiday; and what more American way to enjoy than a sweet boat ride in the middle of the sea? Several people gathered at the Elder Beach in Winnetka, located at the 200 block of Sheridan Road, for a chill day.
Luke Laidley was boating with his friends, enjoying the sunny weather of mid-afternoon. Then, all of a sudden, there was some unsettling activity at a distance from their boat. A group of children were tubing which was tipped off with a jerk at around 1:30 pm. The kids fell into the water and were seen struggling to hold themselves up above the water. However, they were wearing life jackets.
Luke dived in and tried to swim towards the children, even though he was reportedly struggling himself. He managed to get the children back up, but at the moment, he got submerged in the water for a minute or so.
His friends immediately pulled him up into the boat and gave him CPR. They rowed the boat to the shore, where the paramedics again performed CPR on Laidley. When he was still unresponsive, he was rushed to the Northshore Evanston Hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at around 2 pm, as per Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
Who Is Luke Laidley?
Luke Laidley is a 43 years old family man and is survived by his wife, Lauren, and three young children– Logan, 3, Lucas, 7, and Vivian, 5.
Laidley graduated from Boston College, after which he moved to New York City. Straight out of college, he landed his first job at an investment banking firm, Morgan Stanley, in September 2001.
The fresh graduate was an eager learner and determined to perform better at his new job. But fate had a different vision for everyone working at the twin towers of the World Trade Center. On just the second day of his job, Luke was getting oriented into his new office at Tower 2.
And just like that, all the dreams came crumbling down after the hijacked planes collided with both towers while the bombs exploded, demolishing the World Trade Center. According to his family, Laidley could safely evacuate from the 61st of the South Tower. But the terrorist attack took the lives of 13 Morgan Stanley employees.
Experiencing death so closely before his eyes, Luke saw his life with a new perspective as he wrote–
“I encouraged all of us to count our blessings each and every day. Give of yourself and expect nothing in return. And become part of something that is greater than yourself.”
After this incident, he moved to Chicago to continue his finance career, where he met his wife, Lauren.
And now his tragic demise leaves his family with countless memories of the selfless man. They shared in a statement–
“His smile lit up the room. He exuded positivity and perseverance with everything he did. He loved deeply and truly with all his heart.”
“A life lived with purpose. A life lived to serve for others. A life lived as a hero.”
Indeed, selflessness is the greatest superpower anyone could ever have. We pay our respects to Luke Laidley, the unsung hero, and his family.
