Ashley Gavin is a popular American comedian who has been featured on several stand-up specials on the likes of Netflix, Hulu, and Comedy Central. She especially has an appeal amongst the LGBTQ+ community as she came out as a lesbian.
Gavin has toured in several states in the United States and emerged as one of the first lesbian comedians to have participated in the Carnival Cruiseline.
She also has her own podcast series called Having Gay S**, while she is the co-host of another podcast series called The Chosen Family podcast.
On the latter, she works with fellow online creators Makaela Ingemi and Alayna Joy. She is addressed by the moniker ‘Papa’ or ‘Daddy’ on the Chosen Family podcast. Along with the two, she also has her own show Sunday Sqool Comedy, which is done on a weekly basis.
The comedian recently landed in hot waters after one of the attendees on her show called her out for her inflammatory and insulting comments on one of her shows. As per Olivia Neely, who was among the audience at her comedy show at Indianapolis’ Helium Theatre on Saturday, the 36-year-old had told her to end her own life.
After the claim was made on Olivia Neely’s TikTok/Instagram accounts, Gavin has been facing the collective wrath of Twitter. Here is everything you need to know about the non-conformist comedian and how she started getting canceled on social media due to her tone-deaf antics.
What Did Ashley Gavin Do?
According to Neely, Gavin told her to “unalive” herself. However, this happened in an entirely unprovoked situation, which is at the crux of her cancellation on Twitter. In the video posted on her Instagram, Neely had initially bought VIP tickets to Gavin’s show, as she was an avid consumer of her comedy.
She said that the night prior had been a nightmare, as she had a stressful experience with her pet dog. Regardless, she thought that her comedy show experience would be a breath of fresh air.
However, during one of the jokes, Neely simply lets out a “Woo!” in order to encourage the comedian. However, Gavin retorted and called her ‘the most annoying fan to have ever been on the show.’ She then told her to “unalive” herself.
While Neely used a lighter term, Gavin had essentially told her to take her own life. Concluding the video, Neely stated that the comedian didn’t know anything about her own life experience.
While she recognized that Gavin’s comment was essentially fan-service to the edgy audience members, she asked if she would have actually followed up on this and eventually gone on to take her own life. Following this revelation, several social media users took to the comments and gave their criticism of the situation.
Fans Call for Ashley Gavin’s Cancellation
Several fans took to Gavin’s own Instagram page and gave their 2 cents on the matter. They were heavily disappointed to know that Gavin promotes a culture of negativity.
A user told Gavin in the comment section of her latest post, “I get that comedy tends to push boundaries but telling someone to un-alive themselves repeatedly is trash and insensitive. Hope that girl’s tik-tok video goes viral.”
Another one called on her to release the unedited version of her Indianapolis show so that everyone could see the real account of what she took Neely through.
On Neely’s video, several fans recognized how negative a comment Gavin had made. While one user wrote, “I’m so sorry this happened to you. I would have left too. No one should be treated like that,” another one said that some of the best comedians, such as Kevin Hart or Anjalah Johnson, never resort to taking shots at their own fans.
After all the controversy that has been associated with her name, Gavin has not yet issued a response on the matter. The situation is still developing as more and more fans are slowly coming forward and giving their accounts and criticisms of the lesbian comedian’s offensive shtick.
While it doesn’t need to be said that telling someone to take their own life is condemnable, to begin with, it should be noted that if Olivia Neely had been in a bad enough state to go through with it, Gavin could have been charged with manslaughter. With all these facts in front of you, let us know what you think of the situation.
Gavin’s brand of tone-deaf and agitating comedy that encourages conflict and negativity is what led to such a controversy in the first place.
Moreover, other comedians also note the tone-deaf approach Gavin uses, as the market for edgy stand-up and Internet comedy is undoubtedly on the rise.
