These lines from the “Friends” theme song are written for Chandler Bing. The character’s pursuit of happiness began in early childhood, after his parent’s divorce, and he adapted the sarcastic character as a defense mechanism against the harsh world.
His small circle of friends were the only ones who could understand his internal struggles and provide him solace while he was the source of laughter for everyone around him.
But unbeknownst to many, Matthew Perry, who played Bing, channeled his real life into the character loved worldwide. He lived through his struggles with the sole purpose of making people laugh. However, the external entities took a toll on his mental health. And he left the world as a ray of sunshine, with a legacy carved into eternity.
On Saturday, October 29, 2023, at around 4:07 p.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department received a call from the neighbors for a water rescue emergency when they noticed flooding in an adjoining house. But when the authorities reached the place, they found Matthew Perry being unresponsive in his hot tub. Soon, the LAPD investigated the scene at 4:10 p.m. but inferred no foul play and declared the cause of death as “deferred” for now.

Matthew Perry is considered a Hollywood royalty, considering his widely beloved role in the global phenomenon sitcom FRIENDS. To put it into perspective, the cast still receives residual cheques after two decades since it last aired.
The cast’s popularity was so monumental that they established themselves as A-list celebrities with just one show.
Matthew Perry did bag several roles after the hit series, but nothing reached the exact height of popularity. But still, Perry managed to generate astronomical revenue, through which he became an LA native with a plush house in Pacific Palisades.

When the neighbors saw water seeping through Perry’s home, they informed the LA Fire Department for water rescue service. The first responders were the ones to find an unresponsive Matthew Perry in the hot tub. After the initial inspection, they inferred that Perry drowned in the tub.
The LAPD began their investigation soon after and searched for any possible malicious intent by an external entity. But homicide was ruled out as a probable cause after combing through every corner of the house.
What Is the Reason for Matthew Perry’s Death?
According to the preliminary investigation, the LAPD has inferred the reason for Matthew Perry’s death was due to drowning in his bathtub. No foul play was deduced in the investigation.
The LAPD also revealed that no hard drugs were found at Perry’s residence. However, they did find prescribed medications for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which is caused due to excessive smoking of tobacco and other hazardous chemicals. Prescriptions for depression were also found at his home.
The industry and fans are very well aware of Perry’s substance abuse and his life-long struggle to overcome it.
Matthew has been in and out of multiple rehabilitation centers and has detoxed over 65 times. Fans were also concerned during the Friend’s reunion, where Perry was quite melancholic in his demeanor as opposed to the other cast, who seemed jovial. This was evidently unusual from Perry’s character, who was also an embodiment of Chandler Bing.
Perry even penned down his most vulnerable self in an autobiographical book, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir, where the “big terrible thing” referred to his struggle with substance addiction.
This was a significant factor in Perry’s deteriorating mental health, thus raising speculations that this might have been an attempt to unalive himself. However, there are no confirming reports yet, and we shall refrain from elaborating on this further out of immense respect and love for the actor.
