Perry, Iowa, was rocked by a tragic incident on January 4, 2024, as multiple people were shot at the Perry Middle School and High School complex.

This horrifying event occurred on the student’s first day back in classes following their annual winter break. Perry is located in Dallas County, approximately 40 miles northwest of downtown Des Moines, in the heart of Iowa.

As the day began, two gunshot victims were rushed to Iowa’s Methodist Medical Center in nearby Des Moines.

Shooting at Perry High School in Iowa is 4th shooting at a school so far in 2024.

Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante disclosed that the shooting occurred before the school’s regular start time, resulting in fewer students and faculty members present inside Perry High School.

The shooting suspect was swiftly identified, and authorities assured the community that there was no additional threat. However, the name of the shooter was not immediately disclosed.

Social media became abuzz with speculations as users linked a person named Dylan Butler to the incident.

Claims about objectionable content on TikTok and music choices shortly before the tragedy emerged. Curiously, these claimed profiles appeared to have been deleted.

The suspect in the shooting later succumbed to what authorities believe was an utterly self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This incident occurred amidst the backdrop of the Iowa caucuses.

The initial report of an active shooter came in at 7:37 a.m. on the fateful Thursday morning, with law enforcement arriving at the scene within seven minutes, as stated by Sheriff Infante.

While officers confirmed the presence of multiple individuals with injuries, they were unable to provide precise details regarding the number of victims or the severity of their conditions.

UnityPoint Health, the operator of the Des Moines hospital, confirmed receiving the two gunshot victims.

The area around the school complex was quickly inundated with a multitude of emergency vehicles responding to the crisis. Terrified students, like 15-year-old Zander Shelley, recounted their experiences during the ordeal.

Zander had been waiting in a hallway for the school day to commence when he heard gunshots. Acting swiftly, he sought refuge in a classroom, but not before being grazed by two bullets.

He remained hidden inside the classroom and managed to send a text to his father, Kevin Shelley, at 7:36 a.m.

Kevin Shelley, a garbage truck driver, promptly left work after receiving the distressing message, emphasizing the extreme fear he felt during that moment.

Eighteen-year-old senior Rachael Kares, who was wrapping up jazz band practice, also shared her account of the tragedy.

She described hearing four distinct gunshots spaced apart, prompting her band teacher to instruct them to run urgently. Kares and her peers hurriedly evacuated the school premises, with panic and chaos surrounding them.

As the incident unfolded, FBI agents from the Omaha-Des Moines office arrived to lend their support to the ongoing investigation led by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Perry’s Mayor, Dirk Cavanaugh, acknowledged the challenges of obtaining confirmed information amid the chaos, emphasizing the need to exercise caution when dealing with speculative numbers and details.

Perry’s demographics differ notably from the rest of Iowa, with census figures indicating that 31% of residents are of Hispanic descent, compared to less than 7% for the state. Additionally, almost 19% of the town’s residents were born outside the United States.

Perry High School was my home for three years and somewhere I still counsel at in my role at ISU. The students, their families, and staff deserve every ounce of love and support we can give in the days to come. I pray over every person involved. pic.twitter.com/mCfdQySoi6

In light of the tragic events, classes across all Perry Community School District schools were canceled for January 4, and students were evacuated from all buildings, reuniting with their families.

The district’s communication system announced that all staff had been released to return home and were advised not to re-enter the school premises.

Furthermore, the Perry Community School District decided to extend the cancellation of classes to Friday, January 5.

During this difficult time, counseling services will be available at the Perry Public Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on January 5 and January 6 to support students, their families, and the community in coping with this tragic incident.
