The Baltimore riots in 2015 marked a dark day in Black history, a long time before the George Floyd case. Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old young man, was arrested and a few days later was found dead in police custody. The helpless man was in a coma for seven days before he breathed his last.
People took to the streets to protest police brutality. Within ten days, six police officers were charged for Gray’s death.
One Baltimore State’s Attorney stood like a rock amidst the series of acquittals of the cops one by one. Even though the trial ended with all charges against the six officers dropped, Marilyn Mosby’s name was taken in high regard for putting up a brave fight against the system.
But now the same name is under high scrutiny for fraud business.
On November 9, 2023, Marilyn Mosby was found guilty on the charges of two counts of perjury for withdrawing funds from restricted city retirement funds and using it for “$1 million worth of Florida vacation homes” during the pandemic. She has also been indicted for separate mortgage fraud. Convicted of perjury, Ms. Mosby can face up to five years in prison.
Mosby lives in Reservoir Hill, West Baltimore, but the venue of the trial was changed to Greenbelt per the defense’s request.
Why Was Marilyn Mosby Charged?
The former Baltimore State Attorney Marilyn Mosby also owns a private travel business. Per her Instagram bio, she is a managing partner at Mahogany Elite Enterprise, LLC.
During the pandemic, when a majority of businesses were drowning in high debt, Mosby claimed that her venture took a hit as well.
On March 19, 2021, the federal prosecutors lodged an investigation against Mosby’s business accounts, finances, and remuneration. The investigation concluded that Mosby had illegally withdrawn over $90,000 from Baltimore’s deferred compensation plan under the CAREs Act.
At that time, she claimed that she needed a loan since her business was going under. However, her professional accounts reveal that she received a salary of $250,000 that year.
Throughout 2022, Mosby vehemently denied all allegations.
Upon further inspection, Mosby was exposed for buying a luxury home in Kissimmee, Florida, and a condominium in Long Boat Key, Florida, worth $1 million. Prosecutors inferred that she used the city’s money for personal expenses.
Ms. Mosby was also indicted for falsifying her loan applications and mortgage fraud.
Where Is Marilyn Mosby Now?
The pre-trial hearing for Mosby’s perjury charges began earlier this year in January. The defense team took a significant blow during the pre-trial hearings and was also issued a gag order, which prohibits them from talking about this case in the press.
The defense also requested to move the trial to Greenbelt from Baltimore, where Ms. Mosby originally hails from. At first, the judge denied this request, but by the start of the main hearings, they granted the motion to move the trial to Greenbelt.
The official perjury trials began on November 6, 2023. The prosecutors came prepared with witnesses, involving several authorities from the FBI and the government.
Ms. Mosby did not testify, and the defense rested its case. Later, Jurors reached a verdict that Marilyn Mosby was guilty on all counts of perjury charges.
Mosby did not say much to the media when asked about the hearing. She only replied to all the questions with, “I’m blessed. I have nothing else to say.”
Due to this, Ms. Mosby faces up to five years of sentence in prison. As of now, she was last seen leaving the United States District Court Greenbelt Division after the hearings ended.
