Every time a boxer or fighter gets into the ring or cage, they know there’s a huge chance they won’t come back out like they went in. That’s just how these fighting sports roll. From swollen eyes to cut cheeks and more, getting beaten up is part and parcel of multiple-contact sports.
However, in UFC and other fighting sports, two words cause the most panic- brain bleeding. Previously, it was difficult to detect, and fighters would often walk away normally, only to go into a coma later. Vicente Luque suffered this last year during his match against Geoff Neal.
UFC welterweight Vicente Luque suffered a brain hemorrhage after his fight with Geoff Neal last year. He almost lost his life and career but was able to recover miraculously. The fighter credited UFC for standing beside him throughout the testing and recovery process. When he returned to the cage to fight Rafael dos Anjos after his year gap, he won it unanimously.
What Happened to Vicente Luque?
Last year UFC welterweight Vicente Luque suffered an almost catastrophic injury against Geoff Neal. The fighter had a great streak going into the match, but Neal defeated him. Also, during the fight, Vicente Luque sustained a brain hemorrhage.
This injury could have ended his career, and his life as the condition causes bleeding between the skull and tissues of the brain. Also, it can cause bleeding within the brain tissue itself as well.
But Luque didn’t have to lose either his career or life. In fact, he successfully recovered and joined the octagon at UFC Vegas 78. In an interview, the welterweight revealed that UFC stood by him and helped him during the most difficult time of his life.
He said they were there throughout the medical exams and tests to ensure that he was healing well and on track to return to the cage. Luque revealed:
“That was unfortunate, but I was 100% blessed to be able to recover very well, since the first day right after the fight when I got the news. They did all the testing and the examinations; everything went well. My body was recovering. And then the UFC and my manager Ali Abdelaziz, they were always with me in this process.”
He also revealed that he was initially given a six-month suspension. At that time, he was kept under observation at the hospital to ensure that the condition didn’t become something more serious. During that time, he didn’t fight, although he did light activities like grappling to keep himself in shape.
When Vicente Luque recently returned to the cage to fight Rafael dos Anjos, he came out of it a unanimous winner (49-46, 48-47, 48-47). The welterweight was emotional after the fight because it marked a huge milestone for him.
After all, he had successfully recovered from a brain hemorrhage, returned to fighting, and won the first match. Suffice it to say the win gave him a huge confidence boost. In an interview, the fighter said it was a miracle he could fight because he feared his career was over.
In an episode of Trocação Franca, Luque talked about his injury and said:
“I didn’t imagine that one day something like that would happen, but I knew I would be ready if it did. I was calm, but the first couple of days or weeks, there really was doubt that something — and that did worry me if I would be able to continue fighting or not because fighting is what I love doing the most.”
He also said that his dream is to become a champion, and he has a long way to go before he can call himself that.
