Tila Nguyen was born to Vietnamese parents in Singapore on 24 October 1981. The family migrated to the USA and settled in Houston, Texas. But Tila struggled to conform to her family. She couldn’t see herself ‘fitting in.’
Through her melancholic teenage years, she resorted to poetry and eventually ran away from home when she was just 16. With a passion for music, she formed a band that met out of Craiglist, and they called themselves ‘Beyond Betty Jean.’
Even though the band didn’t entirely take off, she formed another band, ‘Jealousy.’ This, too, couldn’t garner substantial credits. She did release several songs as a solo artist as well.
But destiny had other plans for her, as she was miraculously spotted at Sharpstown Mall in Houston, Texas, earning modeling contracts and appearing on a myriad of Playboy magazine covers. Although she completed high school, she decided to quit community college after just one semester.
Her modeling exposure got her several deals, and she quickly became one of the rising hotties in the social sphere. She adapted the name Tila Tequila as an irony because she is not the kind to drink. But this persona garnered her immense influence on MySpace, deemed the ‘Madonna of MySpace’ for her raunchy and explicit photos.
Thus, the Butterfly effect took its course, and Tila Tequila landed her own reality show ‘Shot At Love With Tila Tequila.’ The dating show harped on the bisexuality concept, implying that Tila was queer herself. But we later find out that she was just pretending, but more about that later.
The show enjoyed a brief stint, as it was canceled after two seasons. Even then, Ms. Tila’s fate was working behind the scenes. Due to her personality and being the hottest reality star at that time, she was approached by Johnson & Johnson heiress Casey Johnson. Tila said yes after the heiress proposed, but their love story took a dark turn when Casey was found dead in her apartment due to diabetes.
This devasted Tila completely, who tried to take her own life a few times. In one instance, she even suffered a brain aneurysm during an attempt.
