Amidst the ongoing presidential election campaigns and nail-biting debates of candidates howling at each other, the jokes write themselves. This season is like the ultimate playoffs for all the political and satirical talk show hosts.
From Jon Oliver to Seth Myers, the ratings are skyrocketing as they cover the current campaigns in America.
One such show that has garnered considerable viewership is the ‘Late Show With Stephen Colbert,’ which has challenged all the edges and then walked off it with its ingenious comic take on current events. The relatively new talk show, which premiered in 2015, quickly became one of the most entertaining news parodies and talk shows.
Earlier this month, CBS announced that The Late Show would be airing reruns on account of Colbert’s Covid diagnosis, for which he took a brief hiatus to recuperate. And just when we thought that we were back with the regular dose of satire, The Late Show pulled another one on us.
On November 27, 2023, CBS announced that they had canceled the new episodes of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert as the host, Stephen Colbert, undergoes critical surgery. Colbert revealed on social media that he is recovering from the surgery after a ruptured appendix, following which the upcoming schedule of Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will not be airing.
What Happened To Stephen Colbert? What Surgery Did He Have?
Somewhere around mid-October, Colbert caught COVID-19 for the second time. He conducted his monologues from his home station as he did during the pandemic. Later, in the second week of November, CBS announced that The Late Show would be airing reruns from November 6-10 as Colbert takes a brief hiatus to recover fully.ย
Again, the Thanksgiving holidays compelled another hiatus for the six-time Emmy Award nominee talk show. When the schedule was about to get back on track, another incident marred the popular CBS late-night show.
In usual Colbert fashion, the 59-year-old talk show host announced in a funny post on social media, which readโ
“Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week.”
“I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?’ Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix. I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me. Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas.”
As of now, Mr. Colbert is recovering post-surgery, but his humor sure does survive all odds.
The Reason ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ Is Cancelled This Week
After Colbert’s other health scare with a ruptured appendix, he needed the much-deserved break. CBS has granted total creative freedom to the host to run his show without interference. Colbert has assigned his own staff with talented writers, skilled producers, and experienced executives back from his Jon Stewart days.
Needless to say, he is the locus and the key link of the show, as all creative decisions are run by him before getting a green light.
Due to his critical appendix surgery, Colbert was advised to complete rest for quick recuperation. Hence, CBS decided to pull the following week’s episodes until Colbert is back with his usual zest for new tapings.
