It hasn’t been long since Kirk Cousins faced a knee injury where he tore his Achilles tendon and is now officially out of the season, but another prominent player from the Los Angeles Rams faced a similar situation.
The Los Angeles Rams’ quarterback, Matthew Stafford, left the play mid-game and hasn’t returned to resume his position; instead, he watched the game from the sidelines. What happened to him?
Matthew Stafford, the Los Angeles Rams’ quarterback, injured his right thumb during their game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, which ended with the loss as the latter scored 43 touchdowns. While the severity of the injury is unknown, the Rams are searching for a replacement QB for the time being.
What Happened to Matthew Stafford?
During the match between the Los Angeles Rams and Dallas Cowboys on October 29, 2023, at AT&T Stadium, Matthew Stafford was phenomenal by completing 13 passes out of 22 with a touchdown for 162 yards.
However, despite being quite helpful to his teammates, the player injured his thumb while going for a touchdown. Apparently, Stafford was making a catch during a touchdown situation when he hit his thumb on the rival player’s helmet.
Even though it didn’t bruise him, he went for a touchdown and dove into the end zone, leading to an unexpected injury that forced him out of the game. He was immediately taken to the locker room to get checked.
Eventually, he returned but couldn’t play due to his thumb injury, so he had to watch the game from the sidelines as they lost against the Cowboys by a considerable margin.
Stafford was replaced by the team’s backup quarterback, Brett Rypien, throughout the rest of the game, and he completed five passes for 42 yards while missing the rest five.
Following the game, the head coach of the Rams, Sean McVay, provided an update regarding Matthew Stafford’s injury. Here’s what he said,
“He banged it on the two-point attempt. It looked like he hit the thumb when he was finishing a throw. That wasn’t the injury that limited him. You saw him, he took us right down the field on the opening drive of the second half.”
“Unfortunately, it looked like that injury occurred that kept him out for the rest of the game. It did occur when he ended up catching the two-point attempt.”
“We’ll see what the significance of that injury is, but I don’t want to speculate until I have full clarification from the doctors. But obviously, he wasn’t able to return.”
Stafford already missed eight games last season due to an injury and went on to the list of non-football injuries and illness. So, if the injury should prove to be severe, he might be out of the season, just like Kirk Cousins.
Currently, there is no word of whether he recovered from the injury, but depending on whether he comes back to play in the next game, we can assume what fate awaits the Los Angeles Rams.
After all, a team’s quarterback is almost the key player in scoring touchdowns in the NFL, and we’ve seen them in multiple instances.
So, do you think Matthew Stafford’s injury is critical? Should he sit out the following week’s game to avoid further injuries?
