East Valley commuters who were heading into Phoenix and the West Valley had to find an alternate route on Monday morning as the Loop 202 freeway was closed.
Although the Loop has reopened, it was closed for around 15 hours.
What Happened on the 202 Freeway?
On August 21, a deadly motorcycle crash caused the Loop 202 Red Mountain westbound lanes to shut down. The crash happened near McClintock Drive around 5 am. The westbound lanes were closed from 5:30 am to 9 pm.
Troopers were informed of a report of a disabled car blocking the HOV lane; as the troopers were responding to it, a motorcycle crashed into the vehicle.
The motorcyclist was then hit by another car. The two crashes led to the motorcyclist’s instant death at the scene. He was not identified.
According to DPS, weather and impairment weren’t the factors that caused the collision. After the 15-hour closure of the Loop, it is now open for vehicles. Traffic was redirected to Loop 101 for the duration of the closure.
The eastbound lanes were not affected during or after the collisions. While very scarce reports are available for the accident, we will keep you updated on the case.
