YNW Melly, the creator of the hit track “Murder on My Mind,” is no stranger to legal issues. He has been jailed multiple times for various charges, but the latest case against him could prevent him from releasing another song ever again.
From aggravated assault to discharging of firearms in public and possession of narcotics, you name it, and Melly and been charged for it. These crimes only kept getting bigger and bigger until Melly was charged with the murder of two friends.
Melly has already spent four years in prison as trial dates get pushed back. Now, the death penalty looms over his head.
So what did this famous rapper do? How did the “Murder on My Mind” rapper get actually charged with murder?
What Did Melly the Rapper Do?
Melly was arrested in February 2019 and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. According to the police, Melly and a friend, YNW Bortlen, killed two of their friends. They later staged the scene to make it look like a drive-by shooting.
In October 2018, Christopher Thomas Jr., and YNW Sakchaser, 19 and 21-year-old boys, were killed after getting shot. Florida police claim that the two were last seen at around 3:20 am in Fort Lauderdale.
They arrived at the Memorial Hospital Miramar at 4:35 am with several gunshot wounds. They were reportedly dead already.
Melly mourned the death of his friends on social media, saying: “They took my brothers from me over jealousy.” The rapper claimed the attackers wanted to see him break or be jailed.
On February 13, 2019, Melly was arrested for the murder of his two “brothers,” Christopher and Sakchaser, whom he often talked about in his documentary and interviews.
Investigators revealed phone records that confirmed Melly was at the crime scene. The autopsy reports also suggest he shot the two from inside the car. Police suspect that the bullet holes on the outside of the car were staged in an attempt to misdirect investigations.
In October 2020, the estates of Anthony and Christopher filed a wrongful death suit against Melly and Bortlen. The complaint stated that the shooting resulted from rising tension among the friends over large amounts of money that was about to come in.
The distribution of the money must have led to a dispute. If fewer people were splitting it up, then other receivers would obviously get a larger share.
What Was YNW Melly Sentenced To?
YNW Melly was locked up in 2019 and had been staying there for four years. He is accused of shooting and killing his two friends, Sakchaser and Juvy.
In March 2019, Melly pleaded not guilty but was denied bond. The trial dates keep getting pushed back over whether the death penalty should be allowed.
In April 2019, prosecutors announced that they would seek the death penalty, and the decision was baked by the family members f the victim. However, the sentence was dropped in July 2022, only to be proposed again after just a few months.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has recently lowered the threshold to the death penalty under a new rule. If the rapper s indeed guilty, he will receive the death sentence due to a split of 8-4 jury votes, the lowest threshold in the US.
Is YNW Melly Still Alive?
YNW Melly is still alive, and his trial is on June 20. His death penalty has not been confirmed yet. If he is proven guilty, the judges have to rule 8-4 in favor of the death sentence to seal the rapper’s fate.
However, this announcement proved a prime opportunity for a death hoax to spread on social media. Some fans assume that the rapper is already dead and the trial is over, but that is just fake news that has been spread.
There are polarizing tweets on whether or not YNW Melly won the trial, but I advise you only to trust major news websites.
