How do you support your favorite sports team? Do you wear their jersey? Do you buy their merchandise? Do you watch every game diligently, no matter which ungodly hour it gets broadcasted or streamed?
That’s what most hardcore fans do. There’s another thing that fans do- they track the progress of their teams over the years.
The Baltimore Orioles’ play-by-play announcer Kevin Brown did something similar at the July 23 pregame segment. After all, the story of the Orioles’ rebound into the game has taken everyone aback pleasantly. The team also has the best record in the American League now. But it looks like doing that was a mistake, as Brown has lost his job.
What exactly did Kevin Brown say that cost him his job? The Baltimore Orioles suspended Kevin Brown, their play-by-play announcer because he pointed out that the team had won more games against the Tampa Bay Rays in the current season than the previous three seasons combined. This remark was more like stressing on the losing record of The Baltimore Orioles and didn’t go over well with the management, and they suspended Brown. Although, he is set to return soon.
What Was Baltimore Orioles Announcer Kevin Brown Suspended For?
Baseball fans were surprised even they learned about the weird reason why Baltimore Orioles announcer Kevin Brown was suspended. The Baltimore Orioles have raised many eyebrows with their performance this season.
After all, their comeback was almost unexpected. They went from a 110-loss group a couple of years ago to being the one with the best record in the League now.
However, acknowledging this was a mistake by Kevin Brown. As per USA Today, the Orioles have suspended Kevin Brown, their play-by-play announcer, after he remarked on the poor history of the club against the rivals Tampa Bay Rays. Brown said the Orioles had won as many games in the current season as they had in the last three combined.
Awful Announcing, a media site, first tweeted out about the suspension. When the Orioles came home, their announcer was off-air, and the team conveyed no official reason behind it. However, Brown is supposed to be back in his post soon. After all, many other MLB team broadcasters defended him almost immediately after his suspension was announced.
During his afternoon radio show, Michael Kay, the New York Yankees TV announcer, said the suspension made the Baltimore Orioles look like a minor league team. He also said:
“MLB has to get involved. This is an awful look and a terrible thing to do to a terrific broadcaster.”
He isn’t the only one to speak out about it. Gary Cohen, the Mets broadcaster, also talked about Kevin Brown’s suspension by shaming the team. He said:
“Let me just say one thing to Baltimore Orioles management – you draped yourself in humiliation when you fired [broadcaster] Jon Miller, and you’re doing it again. And if you don’t want Kevin Brown, there are 29 other teams who do. It’s a horrendous decision by the Orioles. I don’t know what they were thinking. But they got exactly the reaction that they deserved. It’s just a shame because the Orioles are playing so well, and now they’ve diverted attention from that and now made themselves a laughing stock.”
Jason Benetti, the announcer of the Chicago White Sox, cheekily remarked about Kevin Brown’s suspension as well. He talked about how the Sox had won 6 of the 13 games against the Baltimore Orioles in the ongoing season and then said that he hopes he doesn’t get suspended by the Baltimore team for saying that.
Social media is also in an uproar following Kevin Brown’s suspension because almost no one can believe that the man was canned for simply praising his team’s performance and saying how far they have come and how much they have improved. But thankfully, Brown will return soon.
The Orioles will start their three-game home series against the Houston Astros on Tuesday.
What are your thoughts about Kevin Brown getting suspended?
Was the reason for his unexpected and shocking suspension silly? Was it done to teach him never to badmouth the Baltimore Orioles? Will he really return on air soon?
