Hunter Biden, the son of the current American president, Joe Biden, has reached a deal with the US attorney for Delaware. Hunter is expected to plead guilty to two tax misdemeanors. He will also plead guilty to criminal gun possession.
This plea will likely spare Biden a jail term, which has enraged many. Some call it a white privilege, while others call it a sweetheart deal, but what exactly is it, and how does Joe Biden tie into all of this?
GOP leaders have reacted with fury to the plea deal, which will spare Hunter Biden jail time. However, the president has yet to be proven involved with the case, spearheaded by David Weiss, who Donald Trump nominated.
Weiss was kept in place specifically to ensure that a US attorney appointed by the president does not oversee his son’s case.
The investigation has been ongoing since 2018, and the recent deal will put an end to the five-year investigation by federal prosecutors, IRS officials, and FBI agents.
Weiss recently stated, “Hunter Biden received taxable income in excess of $1,500,000 annually in calendar years 2017 and 2018. Despite owing in excess of $100,000 in federal income taxes each year, he did not pay the income tax due for either year.”
Additionally, Hunter Biden was in possession of a firearm from October 12 to October 23, 2018, despite knowing he was an unlawful user and was addicted to controlled substances. The gun was thrown out by Biden’s then-girlfriend.
Biden’s attorney, Chris Clark, made it clear that according to his understanding, the five-year investigation into Hunter Biden will be resolved with the agreement between his client and the US attorney for Delaware.
“I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life. He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward.”
The debate over the exact terms of the deal is still ongoing and will be finalized by a federal judge.
Ex-president Trump jumped in at the opportunity to express that the Hunter Biden case proves he was unfairly targeted. The statement is made entirely redundant by the fact that his resistance to the justice system made things worse for him.
Nonetheless, the Hunter Biden plea deal will undoubtedly be weaponized by Biden’s political enemies in the upcoming elections. Some political leaders have already started quoting Hunter’s business career and plea deal to paint the president’s family as a crime hotspot.
While Hunter Biden is clearly in the wrong here, it is tough to link the current president to his son’s wrongdoings or the court proceedings.
According to the filing, Hunter Biden will enter a pretrial diversion program, meaning prosecutors can dismiss the charge if Biden seeks treatment. If brought to court, the gun charge carries a penalty of up to 10 years of prison life.
Hunter Biden has been open about his substance abuse in the past. In fact, he wrote at length about his addiction in his 2021 memoir. The same admissions fueled the gun charge that he is currently facing.
The President and First Lady showed their continuing support for their son in a simple statement: “The President and First Lady love their son and support him as he continues to rebuild his life. We will have no further comment.”
So what do you think of the entire deal? Is Hunter Biden getting a slap on the wrist simply for being the president’s son? Or is the plea deal as just as it could get?
