Anime adaptations from video games are relatively uncommon, with only a handful of titles existing in the mainstream media, such as God Eater and Tales of Zestiria.
However, Netflix’s initiative to adapt the Tomb Raider video games into an anime series may change that. It is also one of the most popular video game franchises, so the popularity obviously transcends every other Netflix anime adaptation.
So, if you’re curious about the specifics of Tomb Raider anime, including its plot, cast, release date, and more updates, you will find them below.
Tomb Raider Anime Plot
If it were any other anime or an unannounced sequel, we would have difficulty speculating about the plot details. However, Tomb Raider is an insanely popular anime based on a video game.
While it is still unclear what the anime will cover from the famous franchise, even with the recently released first look, we know the basic premise every video game and movie is based on.
The story is about Lara Croft, the daughter of an eccentric adventurer who mysteriously vanished years ago. Determined to find her father no matter what, Lara embarks on a journey and finds his last-known location: a mythical island.
However, she is not the only one looking for him, and now Lara must face all kinds of enemies who are seeking treasures that her father has devoted his life to locate.
Tomb Raider Anime Release Date
Even though Netflix has released the first look for the anime, it didn’t reveal any details regarding the release date of Tomb Raider, except the fact that it will be streamed on the platform in 2024.
So, we will have to wait a few months to get the confirmation of an official release date and, hopefully, a trailer.
Tomb Raider Anime Cast, Crew, and Studio
Although not many details were revealed regarding the cast members, what we’ve learned so far from the details that Netflix didn’t keep under the wraps is that Hayley Atwell, best known for playing Peggy Carter in Captain America, will voice the main protagonist, Lara Croft.
Meanwhile, the other two characters who will also become prominent in the story are Zip and Jonah Maiava, voiced by Allen Maldonado (Heels) and Earl Baylon (Vinland Saga), respectively.
The staff members of the anime include:
- Screenwriter: Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood Origin)
- Director: Joey Soloway (Prime Video’s Transparent)
- Producers: Legendary Television, Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix, DJ2 Entertainment, Powerhouse Animation Studios, and Tractor Pants.
- Executive Producers: Howard K. Bliss, Stephen Vladimir Bugaj, Jacob Robinson, and Dmitri M. Johnson.
- Animation Studio: Powerhouse Animation Studios (Castlevania)
So far, these are the only cast and crew members of Tomb Raider anime that have been announced. We’re currently awaiting more information on both.
Tomb Raider Anime First Look
Netflix released the first look at Tomb Raider anime on September 27, 2023, which is basically a mini trailer without words and any prolonged shots.
As you can see from the above first-look video shared by the official YouTube channel of Netflix, Lara Croft arrives at the mythical island and even finds clues about her father’s disappearance that will pave a path to more mysteries.
While there isn’t much apart from a couple of her appearances, the anime seems to adopt a grittier tone from the games.
Tomb Raider Anime: Where to Watch?
Given that the anime is being released as a Netflix original, you can watch it once it is released on Netflix in 2024. No other streaming services outside the US have yet gained the rights to stream it. So, it is safe to assume the anime will stay on Netflix for a while after its release.
