Expend4bles, or people might also call it The Expendables 4, is the latest installment to the action-packed franchise. The movie sees the return of the gang, along with a few newcomers.
However, as the franchise started with Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross forming the team, there have been recent hints that he could die in the recently released movie.
Spoiler Warning: From this point on, you’ll be spoilt.
The movie sees Barney seeking out Lee Christmas, Gunner Jensen, and the rest of the gang for their biggest mission yet. What is more surprising is whether Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross is alive or not. In the first few scenes of the movie, Barney’s plane crashes into the ground, and we see his charred corpse inside the cockpit. However, that was actually not the case as he makes his stylish return after faking his death in the end, revealing Barney Ross is indeed alive.
Did Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross Die in The Expendables 4?
As the actor announced that this movie would be his last one, many were speculating that this would be the final time audiences would see Barney Ross leading the team.
Even in the opening scenes of the film, Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross is seen dead in a plane crash, but that is actually not the case. In a failed attempt to prevent Rahmat from getting some detonators for nuclear bombs in Libya, his plane is shot down and explodes.
The team sees his burnt corpse, although his ring remains totally intact, which teased that we might get to see him further in the movie. However, the Expendables team carries on as though Barney is dead, with Gina, played by Megan Fox, appointed new leader by CIA handler Marsh.
In the movie, Lee Christmas disobeys a direct order from Barney to not save him and focuses on the detonators and is later kicked out by the CIA handler.
Later, as the plot gets intense, things get a little tough for Lee against Marsh and his remaining goons. Suddenly, a helicopter arrives out of nowhere, blows the baddies up, and shoots Marsh multiple times.
The ending of the movie leaves audiences stunned as they get to know that confirmation that Barney Ross’ death was faked. It surely made audiences suspicious of this deadly fate for Sylvester Stallone’s character Barney, who was never actually dead, as happened early on in the movie.
Has Sylvester Stallone Left His Role as Barney Ross In The Expendables Franchise?
Before the release of the movie, the actor made it official that he was “ready to pass the baton.” Sylvester Stallone confirmed The Expendables 4 will be his last film in the franchise, leaving Jason Statham to lead future films.
Sharing a video on his Instagram profile, the Expendables actor wrote, “Today is my last day of filming … Heading home. So, they go” as a caption in the video.
While walking down through the sets of the movie, he addressed his departure from the franchise and said, “It’s time to be moving on. This will be my last day, so I’m enjoying it, but it’s always bittersweet.” Sylvester Stallone said that he had been attached to the role for around 12 years and added, “I’m ready to pass the baton on to Jason [Statham] and his capable hands.”
With all that, If The Expendables 5 does happen in the future, the team would likely be the same but without Barney Ross. As Barney is back from the dead, the audience might get to see him, but considering his statement about his exit, we wonder what is next for the franchise.
