Sports, melodrama, and heartfelt emotions- these three words best describe the Apple TV show that took the world by storm with a title character who is the poster guy of feel-good and wholesome.
But sadly, it’s finally time to bid goodbye to Ted Lasso. For three seasons, fans have loved AFC Richmond and all the drama in the people’s lives surrounding it.
With the finale in the rearview, it’s time to take a deep breath and decode it. Did it live up to fans’ expectations? Did Roy and Keeley get together? Did Rupert get his poetic justice? However, there’s one more question that ardent viewers of the show want to know more about- did Rebecca and Ted sleep together?
Fans of Ted Lasso and Rebecca Welton wanted them to get together. But the finale didn’t deliver that. Initially, it was implied that they had spent the night together, but it was later revealed that it was because of a gas leak and nothing sexual or romantic happened. Ultimately, Jason Sudeikis’ Ted returns to America, and it’s hinted that Hannah Waddingham’s Rebecca gets into a relationship with the mysterious Dutchman she meets.
Ted Lasso Ending Explained
Ted Lasso’s series finale brought a lot of surprises. But it can be argued that the show should have split the ending into two episodes because it felt too crammed with all the plotlines that had to be resolved. But it still delivered a worthy series ending.
Ted Lasso announced that he was leaving England, and not even Rebecca’s pleading deters him from his decision. So the team sings “So Long, Farewell” to him after the final practice. With the team facing West Ham, it’s their biggest game yet. But the group struggles in the first half after being down 2 points.
So Lasso pulls out one of his trademark pep talks, and the team turns the game around, winning the championship. In the end, when Rupert pushes West Ham’s coach into the ground in anger, upset at the loss, the crowd chants Wanker! at him. This is when the series comes full circle.
After all, the show began with the crowd chanting the same to Lasso at the beginning. At the airport, Rebecca and Ted share a tearful goodbye. Ted also gives Coach Beard his blessings to lead Richmond. In the end, we see Ted at Henry’s soccer game. When his son is upset at missing a turn, he simply tells him to be a goldfish.
In the end, Lasso is presented with the draft of the book titled after him. All Ted says is to change the title because it was never about him. This one meta-reference means that the show can carry on in other ways if the makers want.
Did Ted and Rebecca Sleep Together?
Tedbecca (Ted Lasso and Rebecca Welton) fans have been praying for AFC Richmond’s owner and coach to get into a relationship with each other. In the finale, there was a hint that they might have gotten into a relationship. After all, the episode began with the suggestion that they had slept together.
However, that gets immediately debunked. It’s shown that Ted was actually spending the night at his boss’ home due to a gas leak. While they didn’t get together, the two of them got plenty of heartfelt moments, like Rebecca begging Ted to stay with the club and him not being able to say much in return. They even share a tearful goodbye at the airport.
However, Jason Sudeikis’ Ted Lasso leaves the club and returns to the USA while it’s shown that Hannah Waddingham’s Rebecca Welton, who was searching for love, might have found it in the arms of a Dutchman. It’s shown that this is what the family psychic was hinting about at the beginning of season 3.
This ending for the two beloved characters has upset many fans, while others have rejoiced because the two are great friends and remain so till the end.
Who Does Keeley End Up With?
Brett Goldstein’s Roy Kent and Juno Temple’s Keeley Jones went through a lot together in the show. Many viewers expected them to end up together, but that didn’t happen. However, it’s clear that Roy wants to be with the model-turned-PR consultant of Richmond.
But Keeley doesn’t accept him back, and neither does she get into a relationship with anyone in the finale. Instead, it seems like she’s focusing on creating the women’s football team at Richmond with Rebecca. So Keeley is dead set on her professional aspirations and working on herself. But why does she reject Roy?
It’s suggested that it’s because Roy isn’t ready to get into a relationship. But in the finale, he is shown to be making progress. He is now Richmond’s manager and is going to therapy to improve himself. As such, the two may rekindle their relationship in the future.
Why Did Ted Lasso End?
Many seem to think that Ted Lasso got canceled. But that isn’t the case. The show ended as per the creator’s wishes. One of the major reasons behind ending the show on season 3 was Jason Sudeikis’ busy schedule which might not have permitted him to star in more seasons.
But even then, Sudeikis confirmed in an interview with Deadline in March 2023 that this was the ending that was always the plan.
“This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell. The fact that folks will want more and are curious beyond more than what they don’t even know yet—that being Season 3—it’s flattering.”
Jason Sudeikis
So is a spin-off possible? There are doors left open in the finale which can be pushed open. However, for now, this is the end of the road for Ted Lasso and AFC Richmond.
What are your thoughts on the finale? Should the makers have put Ted and Rebecca together? Should Keeley have accepted Roy?

I love this show and every single character in it! It is perfect in its imperfection, so some claim, the happy ending is just what it was. You can’t get any better than that!
I wouldn’t change a thing!
But what I would like is more shows like this! So much teaching and learning about love and forgiveness and feelings of inadequacy from a past childhood! Who doesn’t have that?! I too, now, have a memory of a goldfish. And I too, now, am curious not judgemental.
