Ah! To be trapped in the dystopian world of capitalism where the poor fight for their life and the rich bet on who will win the fight. Squid Game, created by Hwang Dong-Hyuk, shows the imagery of the future and the reflection of the present, where society has tipped the balance between the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots.’

The series garnered several accolades for its ingenuity in juxtaposing the harsh truth of social evils with children’s games. And now, the series is adapted into a real-life version with a thrilling show.

Imagine a world where childhood games turn into a high-stakes battle for a life-changing fortune. That’s precisely what brought to our screens.

In the climactic final episode of “Squid Game: The Challenge,” which just aired on Netflix this Thursday, December 7th, we saw Mai Whelan emerge victorious. Viewers wondered what she did with the astronomical prize money of $4.56 Million. As it turns out, Mai stated that she will probably use the money to renovate her Virginia home and spend it with her family. The most she has splurged was on a Ralph Lauren dress.

Let’s take a step back. The final showdown was nothing short of a rollercoaster, with 456 contestants dwindling down to three – Mai, Phill, and Sam. The intensity of the games, reminiscent of the eerie children’s games from the original Korean series, had viewers on the edge of their seats.

Circle of Trust, Glass Bridge, and the final Rock, Paper, Scissors duel were not just games but battles of wit and willpower. And in the midst of all this, we saw Mai, our underdog, emerge as the champion.

Bold Decision, Bold Spending? Does Mai Have An Extravagant Plan To Spend Her Money?

The Vietnamese refugee has endured a hard life before migrating to the USA for literal survival. Then who better to challenge than someone who has lived through hell to be a part of Squid Game?

The US Navy veteran who served the country for 20 years was a contender who can never be underestimated.

Mai was the only one with balls to call out Ashley on Squid Games. How does an elderly woman have more balls than these younger contestants? I bet $5 million she wouldn’t have nominated herself in that dice game pic.twitter.com/Xbyv9yYOwt

That mess had me so frustrated on Netflix Squid Game. Ashley being stubborn af not following the agreed plan with everyone to take a new glass jump ahead, making Trey take extra 3 jumps to his death, then gaslighted Mai and the rest saying she did. #SquidGameTheChallenge 😤 pic.twitter.com/16pDcuFr6B

Now that my blood is done boiling after what Ashley did to Mai, I am over the moon with Karma being the ultimate b*tch! Mai is the queen we were all rooting for, and our humble queen is living her life, sitting on $4.56 Million.

Congratulations to the Queen herself MAI (Player 287) on being named the first ever champion of SQUID GAME: THE CHALLENGE! 🎉#SquidGame #SquidGamesTheChallenge pic.twitter.com/dJGLMW92qq

Mai’s approach to her newfound fortune is both practical and heartwarming. She’s back home in Virginia, planning to renovate her house and build a small dock for a boat. There’s also the unexpected splurge on a black velvet Ralph Lauren gown for the press tour, but as Mai puts it,

“I couldn’t help it. That’s about as frivolous as I want to go.”

Mai was the show’s underdog, as she grappled with tough competition and slimmer chances of winning. Lo! Behold! Against the odds, Mai stands victorious, completely leaving us to fall back with a whiplash.

Life Beyond the Game: What Happened To Mai After The Game?

"[It feels like] a burden off my shoulder because I was holding the secret for the longest [time], almost a year."

After the adrenaline rush, how does one adjust back to normal life? Despite her huge win, she remains grounded. “It was a relief to go back to normal life and not worry about getting eliminated,” Mai shared with Netflix. Her statement, “I’m still Mai, and she hasn’t changed – except that I came out stronger,” reflects her resilience.

The article then details Mai’s plans for her winnings. Beyond personal use, she’s driven by a desire to make a positive impact. “My heart is with people, animals, and climate change,” she says, signaling her intent to contribute to larger causes.

Watching Ashley, player 278, get eliminated was SO satisfying. Mai is too mature I’d be doing the most to rub it in Ashley’s face hahaha #SquidGame pic.twitter.com/n3op5OzOKA

From a little girl who wrote school plays and made her friends act in them to an adolescent who got into dark humor, Yashica has built her own universe of peculiar characters inspired by great cinema. She has imbibed the philosophies of David Fincher's characters but lives like the eccentricity of Phoebe Waller Bridge's women. Her metahumans are those who can use the power of words to create an elixir of emotions and bring them to life on screen. Jordan Peele, Issa Rae, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Ilana-Abbi, Raj-DK, Anurag Kashyap, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and others are her Marvel's Avengers. With over two years of experience as a content writer, her writing pieces are well-researched, with a sprinkle of her opinions/inferences that keep the audiences engaged. She is still exploring more on the anime scene but is highly intrigued by it. The cinephile in her makes her appreciate the intricacies of filmmaking. You will get a lot more insight into it in her articles and thoroughly enjoy her explanations. Well, someday, you might see Yashica as one of the writers for a movie-- it's her ultimate dream!
