Last week was a testament to a rookie force and how the new NFL players are challenging the game. The entire stadium roared as the fierce rookie navigated the way to the LA Rams victory. Puka Nacua, the wide receiver, left no crumbs for the Seahawks with 10 catches for a combined 119 yards….and that’s just his professional debut.
The momentous glory of the Rams, with 30-13 over the Seahawks, established Nacua as a reliable contribution to the team.
But the journey to this grand debut was marred with several challenges. Born in Provo, Utah, on May 29, 2001, Nacua was the pride of the state as a young prodigy. He served Orem High School with record-breaking victory. His high school stats of 260 catches, 5,226 receiving yards, and 58 receiving touchdowns, the highest for any player, paved the way for his college career.
The Washington College scene changed with Nacua’s admission to the team– In the freshman year, Nacua amassed considerable stats of 7 catches for 168 yards and two touchdowns. But there came his first obstacle as he severely injured his foot.
While he just recovered, the COVID-19 curtailed the playoff 2020 season. Even with the second hurdle, he managed to produce significant stats of 9 receptions for 151 yards and one touchdown in three games.
However, these setbacks were the major stepping stones as he entered the NCAA transfer portal. His transfer to BYU proved to be his rising star with groundbreaking stats: 40 passes for 805 yards and 6 touchdowns.
And moving swiftly in his career, Nacua made it to the 2023 NFL draft, selected in the fifth round and 177th overall pick. The 22-year-old rookie marked his professional debut last week with a warrior spirit, fighting for every Yard point he can with his formidable build of 6 feet 2 inches in height and 205 pounds.
This raised curiosity pertaining to Nacua’s ethnicity, considering his dexterity, strength, and speed with the right amount of aggression.
Although Puca Nacua is from Utah, his origins can be traced back to West Samoa. Per the research, Puka Nacua is actually of Polynesian ethnicity.

Puka Nacua enjoyed a pretty stable childhood with an array of loving and supportive family members. Ever since he was young, his family encouraged him to join sports, considering his penchant for athleticism.
But at the same time, he was also nicknamed Puka, which translates to a chubby child. Although his original name is Makea, he is now a beloved rookie, as people still chant Puka while cheering for him. He said in an interview–
“I got the nickname as an infant, and it kind of stuck. Even after I lost weight, everyone still called me Puka when I was growing up and in school.”
Puka’s maternal grandmother was said to have migrated from Polynesia, a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. Contrary to popular belief, Nacua is not a Hawaiian since his grandmother moved from West Samoa to Utah with her only daughter.

The LA Rams wide receiver has just set a new record with 15 receptions in a single game– a new high for any rookie in NFL history. Despite the Rams’ loss, Nacua held his own with a colossal offense, hauling in 15 of his 20 targets against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
The rookie record was initially jointly held by Washington’s Roy Helu, New York Giants’ Saquon Barkley, and Pittsburgh’s Najee Harris. However, Nacua is not only the undefeated king, but he is the only rookie to reach a double-digit stat in receptions as he fought for the 17-yard catch in the fourth quarter.
