Stars from all over the world descended on the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Their Holy Grail was the Met Gala 2023 event that was held on May 1.
The annual spectacle brews new controversies every year, whether it’s the themes, guests, or the best red carpet looks. The theme for Met Gala 2023 was: Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.
The theme for this year’s Met Gala was met with controversy as Kar Lagerfeld was known for his fat-phobic comments as well as opposition to the #MeToo movement. The man is stepped in negative comments as much as he is in the world of couture. Still, celebs tried their best to honor the man for the revolution he brought about in the fashion industry.
Karl Lagerfeld, an icon in the fashion world, designed for monumental houses like Fendi, Chanel, Balmain, and Patou, not to mention the house of Karl Lagerfeld. The designer was often spotted donning a black suit with sunglasses. The iconic look also included his white hair pulled back into a ponytail.
Celebrities took inspiration from Karl’s usual attire and traipsed in endless lines of black and white. As always, some celebs stole the show while others fell short of expectations. Here are the top looks from the Met Gala 2023 that made us say, ‘White is the new black.’
Dua Lipa
Dua Lipa showed up on the red carpet wearing a gown from Chanel’s 1992 Fall Couture and a Tiffany’s diamond necklace. She looked absolutely gorgeous, and the structured skirt with the snatched waist gave us Disney princess vibes.
Anne Hathaway
Hathway blew us away with a Swarovski crystal-embellished dress by Versace. The idea behind the look was to show a junction point between Versace and Chanel. Versace reported that “The dress is a tribute to our shared ’90s experience—tweed, pearls and camellias mixed with safety pins, slashes, and a corset. Anne looks powerful, feminine, stunning and of course iconic.”
Jenna Ortega
Ortega reminded us of Wednesday once again with her latest dress at the Met Gala. Her look paid homage to Karl while squeezing in some details to remind us of the viral character she played.
A$AP Rocky and Rihanna
As fans wondered whether the singer would even attend the event, Rihanna entered with A$AP Rocky in tow. Rihanna wore a fur coat from Fendi’s fall 1997 collection, which Karl himself designed. Layers of diamond necklaces and camellia earrings that acknowledged Coco Chanel’s love for flowers were on gorgeous display.
Tems
Temilade Openiyi, or Tems in short, arrived at the Met Gala 2023 to awe us with the creativity behind her gown. The singer left a mark at the red carpet event and wore a custom Rober Wun dress. The leafy structures attached to her costume made her stand out even more.
The Kardashians
The Kardashian sisters never disappoint, especially in terms of their attire. After speculations going viral that the sisters will not attend, they finally showed up, lighting up the atmosphere.
Kim wore a form-fitting gown that was “dripping in pearls.” It was an ode to the Chanel looks designed by Karl Lagerfeld. The dress was paired with a white shawl that matched well with the pearls.
Kylie Jenner embraced the opposite end of the spectrum, sporting a cherry red gown with pumps.
Of course, we cannot forget Kendall, whose black Marc Jacobs bodysuit spelled class. Fans loved the dramatic sleeves that trailed behind her. A high ponytail, platform boots, and Lorraine Schwartz Jewelry completed her clean but dashing look.
Cardi B
The talented singer and rapper wore a ballgown by Chenpeng Studio. A white collar shirt and a black tie transitioned into a black bodice. The drama didn’t end there, as what followed was a structured black skirt covered in black sculptural roses.
The pearl earrings and black hairband reminded us of the old but gold Hollywood era.
Bad Bunny
It wasn’t only the ladies who stole the attention at Met Gala 2023. Bad Bunny showed up in a gorgeous suit and won the ‘best-dressed man’ title in a single swoop. Wearing Jacquemus, Bad Bunny is in a no-nonsense mood as he sports a white suit with a floral accessory.
Billie Eilish
The ‘Bad Guy’ singer showed up in a Simone Rocha high-necked dress. The fabric was repurposed and made into a patchwork. According to Simone Rocha, “I wanted to celebrate her femininity through fragility and strength. Working with fragile tulle and edging it in lace, interpreting embellishment as armor, and creating a look which reflected an emotion, a very layered piece revealing what lies beneath…”
Doja Cat
Who didn’t know about Karl’s love for his cat? Doja Cat found this to be her opportunity to come out dressed as something that would do justice to both her name as well as Karl.
She used facial prosthetics to look like a cat and wore a shiny, glittery white dress by Oscar de la Renta.
Jared Leto
Jared Leto might have outdone himself this year, cosplaying as a huge cat. He looked more suited to a football mascot than on a red carpet, but you could find no one complaining. He has owned the word ‘crazy’ by now.
Thankfully, the celeb removed his giant costume’s head; otherwise, no one would know who it was.
Serena Williams
Tennis genius Serena Williams arrived with her husband, and everyone was in awe at her mommy-glow-up. She is pregnant with their second child but didn’t hesitate to serve looks.
Priyanka Chopra
A strapless Valentino gown with a thigh-high slit is what made PCJ shine at the Met Gala. Her Bulgari necklace with a blue crystal pendant was also a scene stealer, but nothing could steal the chemistry between her and Nick.
Robert Pattinson and Suki Waterhouse
Pattinson and Waterhouse’s couple debut on the red carpet turned quite some heads. Waterhouse dominated with a transparent floral Fendi gown, and Pattinson sported a Dior suit. They definitely made it on the list of cutest celebrity couples at the Met Gala.
