Jujutsu Kaisen is arguably one of the best anime shows in recent years, and Gege Akutami is dropping back-to-back plot twists in the story, especially during the Shibuya Incident Arc.
Episode sixteen of the second season has rendered fans once again with various emotions as Toji, who was believed to be a cold-blooded killer, killed himself. So, why did Toji kill himself rather than exterminate Megumi?
Toji, before he became the Sorcerer Killer, was the father of Megumi, who involuntarily abandoned his son. After facing off against Megumi in the Shibuya Incident arc Episode 16, Toji learned that Megumi chose Fushiguro as his last name rather than Zenin and is safe. So, to protect his son from himself, he decided to end his own life and partly atone for his sins.
Explained: Why Did Toji Decide To Kill Himself in the Shibuya Incident Arc?
Before we delve into why Toji went against his will to kill himself, we need to learn what happened to him and how he turned into a sorcerer killer from a mere human, as revealed by Episode 16 in Jujutsu Kaisen.
During his flashbacks, Toji Fushiguro made a deal to sell his son to the Zenin clan, whom he resented his whole life, but before he could fulfill it, he was presumed dead but came back in the form of the Sorcerer Killer.
Before presumably dying at the hands of Gojo Satoru, Toji asked him to take care of his son, Megumi Fushiguro, but he didn’t really expect it would happen because the Zenin clan would surely take him into custody by claiming the deal.
Following his death, Toji was eventually revived by Ogami, a special user who has the ability to implant deceased souls into her grandson’s body. Thus, she resurrected Toji, trapping him against his consciousness.
During the Shibuya Incident arc, Megumi faced off against Toji, and he immediately knew that his opponent wasn’t someone he could defeat alone. However, just before Toji almost killed Megumi, his memories resurfaced from the past.
Remembering that Megumi is his son, he asks for his name, hoping he would somehow still remain a Fushiguro rather than take on the name of the Zenin clan.
When Megumi tells his last name, Toji is moved that his son, despite not knowing how his father looks or what he is, decided to follow in his footsteps.
To make sure his son doesn’t die once he loses control of his vessel, he stabbed himself in the head with his Playful Cloud, hoping that it would be enough to atone for sins.
Toji is also reassured that Megumi has grown to be a fine sorcerer, and under the guidance of Gojo Satoru, he can find his way out no matter the situation. So, Toji killing himself is a way of ensuring Megumi has a future.
So, what are your thoughts on the latest episode of Jujutsu Kaisen? Did you expect Toji Fushiguro to kill himself, especially when he was such an iconic villain?
