When news first broke that WIT Studio, known for hits like Attack on Titan and Spy x Family, would be helming a remake of the iconic One Piece anime, excitement quickly turned into concern.

Rumors spread like wildfire that WIT Studio might use AI in the production process, sparking a heated debate among fans about the potential impact on the beloved series.

But after days of speculation, the studio has finally cleared the air.

No, WIT Studio will not use AI in the One Piece remake. The initial concerns were based on earlier statements and WIT’s history with AI, but a recent tweet from art director Tomonori Kuroda confirms that AI will not play a role in this highly anticipated project.

The speculation began when George Wada, CEO of Production I.G and WIT Studio, mentioned in an interview the potential for AI and digital tools to be used in creating “better works” as technology evolves.

They are really going to use Ai and CGI to remake the new One piece episodes I’m cryin, it’s so over for the franchise of one piece💀

Given that WIT Studio had previously used AI-generated backgrounds in a Netflix short film, The Dog and the Boy, fans feared that similar technology might be used in the One Piece remake.

This fear was compounded by vague references to “cutting-edge visual technology” in promotional materials for the remake, leading many to believe that AI could be involved in the animation process.

The idea that AI might replace traditional hand-drawn animation or even voice acting was met with significant backlash, as fans worried it would strip away the human touch that has made One Piece so special.

WIT Studio Sets the Record Straight

After days of growing concern and discussion across social media, Tomonori Kuroda, the art director for the remake, has stepped up to calm the waters. In a tweet from February, Kuroda took a firm stance against AI use in animation, arguing it disregards the rights and dignity of creators. He even called on fellow artists to stick to their professional ethics, and AI legality be damned!

They point to a recent One Piece Twitter post featuring an AI-generated song using the voices of the Japanese voice actors. Even more eyebrow-raising?

Eiichiro Oda himself provided an illustration for it!.

Oda literally asked readers to stop sending artwork made using AI in his SBS. If George Wada, WIT Studio and Toei (who still has the rights) allow themselves to use AI for this remake, it would be a shitty remake of One Piece no matter what. It needs to be boycotted. https://t.co/EVHgQ9NKxb

In a tweet, art director Tomonori Kuroda confirmed that no AI-generated art or technology would be used in the One Piece remake. This statement was a huge relief to fans who had been dreading the possibility of AI diminishing the quality and soul of the anime.

Kuroda tweeted, “For now, I don’t intend to use the current problematic image generation AI tools for work, which are unauthorized and damage the interests and dignity of the rights holders. Even if they are legal and commercially available, I will try not to use anything that violates my professional ethics.”

Tomonori Kuroda, the art director for the remake, has been a strong advocate against the use of AI in anime production. His outspoken stance likely played a crucial role in ensuring that the remake would remain true to its artistic roots. Kuroda has emphasized that AI undermines the creative process and the dignity of the artists involved, and he has committed to keeping the One Piece remake free from AI influence.

The confirmation that AI won’t be used has largely put fans at ease, but the episode has highlighted the deep concerns many have about the future of anime in the age of technology.

While AI has its place in various industries, its potential to replace human creativity in art and animation is a contentious issue.

For a series as cherished as One Piece, the idea that its remake could be influenced by AI was particularly unsettling. One Piece isn’t just a story, it’s a cultural landmark, and its legacy is built on the passion and skill of countless animators, voice actors, and artists. The thought of replacing even a part of that process with AI was enough to spark a significant outcry.

What’s Next for the One Piece Remake?

Now that the AI controversy has been put to rest, fans can look forward to the One Piece remake with renewed excitement. WIT Studio’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the original series while updating it for a modern audience is a promising sign that the remake will live up to expectations.

There’s also the question of the aging Japanese voice cast. Some fans wonder if AI could be used to preserve their iconic performances long after they’ve hung up their den den mushis.

On the flip side, others argue that animation is an art form that can’t be optimized by removing the human element. They fear AI could lead to widespread job losses in the industry, from animators to voice actors.

Well, this is what we think.

How to Use AI in Anime:

  • Background enhancement: Use AI to add detail to non-crucial background elements.
  • Color consistency: Employ AI for maintaining color palettes across episodes.
  • In-between frame generation: Use AI to smooth out animations between keyframes.
  • Voice preservation: Potentially use AI to maintain iconic voice performances as actors age.
  • Storyboard assistance: AI could help visualize initial storyboards for director approval.

How Not to Use AI in Anime:

  • Character design/animation: Avoid using AI for main character designs or crucial animations.
  • Plot generation: Don’t rely on AI for story development or dialogue writing.
  • Music composition: Keep the iconic One Piece soundtrack human-composed.
  • Full scene creation: Avoid using AI to generate entire scenes without human oversight.
  • Voice acting replacement: Don’t completely replace voice actors with AI-generated voices.

As the debate rages on, one thing’s clear: The One Piece community is passionate about preserving the integrity of their beloved series. Whether AI will play a role in the remake remains to be seen, but you can bet fans will be watching closely as this story unfolds.

So, nakama, what do you think? Is AI the future of anime production, or should it walk the plank?

Averagebeing’s Take: The One Piece AI debate shows how even the most beloved franchises aren’t immune to industry shake-ups. The AI scare was a wake-up call about the role of technology in art, but it’s good to see WIT Studio listening to the fans. It’s a reminder that, as fans, we need to stay engaged and vocal about how our favorite stories are brought to life. After all, isn’t that what Luffy would do – stand up for what he believes in, no matter the odds?
