This year marked the end of some of the best spellbinding Emmy-Award-winning TV series, including Barry, Succession, and now Ted Lasso.
This Apple TV show started with a pretty simple but absurd premise. Rebecca hires an inexperienced American, Ted Lasso, to coach an English Premier League Soccer team owned by her ex-husband Rupert. Why, one may wonder?
She wanted the team to fail as vengeance for her unfaithful ex-husband. As unusual as the circumstances may be, the entire three seasons fleshes out the journey of optimism and positive reinforcement.
While Ted displays the advantages of a positive attitude in the first two seasons, by the third season, we are hit with a realism that sometimes practicing optimism has its own repercussions.
The season follows the storylines of several other characters with overlapping structures and Ted-Rebecca’s possible ship. However, season three, episode 12 ties all the loose ends together to give a heartwarming end to the series.
Ted Lasso Season 3 Finale Recap
We are at a nail-biting match between AFC Richmond hashing it out against West Ham. Coming back full circle, it boils down to Rebecca v/s Rupert. The episode starts with the previous episode’s cliffhanger. Ted, Coach Beard, and Jane are all at Rebecca’s, and at first, the viewers assume that something might have happened between the four.
However, the Ted-Rebecca possible Loveline was all a fake-out, and when Ted says he wants to talk about “it,” the truth bomb is totally unexpected. Ted is actually planning to leave AFC Richmond, and the entire episode revolves around the chain effect of this decision.
Next, we have the epic love triangle (more like the Bermuda Triangle of love) between Roy Kent, Keely Jones, and Jamie Tartt. Roy and Jamie are at loggerheads over Keely’s love. But she first makes it clear that it is her decision. Although undisclosed, we all know that Keely did not end up with any of them because she didn’t want to be perceived as a trophy girlfriend.
It was a rough start for Richmond, but nothing like a good old Ted Lasso speech to motivate even the stones to dance. And the final win was the perfect end to the Richmond journey.
Trent Crimm was nervous about his book draft, “The Lasso Way.” But in the Ted fashion, he tells Trent that it was never just about him; it was always about the journey of an underdog team. The published book is titled “The Richmond Way.”
Was That the Final Ted Lasso?
It seems like all the storylines have found a perfect closure. Ted is going back to America to be with his son.
Nate is welcomed back to the team, sharing one final heart-warming moment with Ted.
In a dramatic Rom-Com way, Coach Beard marries Jane just as he is about to leave for America. He tells Ted he cannot leave because of his love for Jane. And we also learn that Coach Beard’s name is Willis!
And after all, AFC Richmond gets a new coach–Roy! It’s a partial happy ending for him.
Kicking off the pride month, the gays downright steal the show in the end!
The montage of endings indicates that this is indeed the final season & episode of Ted Lasso.
Will There Be a Ted Lasso Spin-Off?
Although the climax was pretty satisfactory, some characters feel they met with an untimely conclusion. Nate’s redemption arc doesn’t seem adequate, given that his transition toward the antagonist side was so intense in the previous season. One theory is that a Ted Lasso spin-off can be Nate’s journey to accept his potential as a coach and start from the bottom.
It would also be interesting to see the continuation of the Richmond team in a spin-off series, with the players as the primary focus.
And lastly, one spin-off idea could be Ted’s journey after his success in England. Maybe he can go to some other country, preferably an Asian one, like Mr. Baseball.
Why Does Ted Lasso Leave?
Ted suffers from severe panic attacks during the seasons. He realized that it wasn’t Nate but his own mind that was overpowering his optimism. Even then, he persevered positively to take his team to the final win.
However, it seems perfect that he would want to return home with a call-back to season 1, where his final resolution was always coming back home. He finally gets to spend quality time with his kid; he might have a new job. Him coaching his son’s junior league is an adorable end to the series.
What do you think of the season finale of Ted Lasso? Did you want the story to continue, or was it the perfect end? Which character would you like to have a spin-off?
