We all know how it feels when our long-running favorite show ends. There’s simply an emptiness that permeates our souls that we can’t eliminate. But there’s something even worse:

When our favorite star or the host of our favorite show leaves.

Fans of BBC’s Gardeners’ World should prepare themselves for Monty Don leaving the show he has been hosting for 20 years. But will he quit in 2023 itself?

No, the host of BBC’s Gardeners’ World, Monty Don, won’t leave the show he has been hosting for 20 years in 2023. But as per a November 6, 2023 interview with The Guardian, he plans to go “within the next five years.” Also, he wants a female presenter to replace him.

Will Monty Don Leave Gardeners’ World In 2023?

“Therefore, the logical thing to give up is Gardener’s World.”

BBC’s Gardeners’ World began airing in 2003, and for two decades, host Monty Don has held down the fort. Now, in a recent interview with The Guardian on November 6, 2023, he has expressed his desire to leave it. But when?

As per his words- “Within the next five years.”

And why is he leaving?

Because he is 68 years old now, soon to be 70. Monty is having trouble scrambling between hosting a TV show and pursuing other interests like writing books, making documentaries, etc.

So, instead of dividing his time between the two, he wants to focus on making documentaries and writing books. After all, he has hosted the show for quite a long time.

However, it doesn’t look like Monty will leave the show in 2023. But it’s fair to say that everything is game from 2024, as he will probably begin planning his retirement the following year. As for when he will actually leave, the beloved host hasn’t declared the specific date yet.

However, he has acknowledged the changes that the next generation of gardeners will have to deal with. He said:

“A generation of gardeners has emerged with less access to a garden than any in living memory. So they have to be more flexible. It might be a window box, pots in a shared house, or, if they have a garden, it might be much smaller than they want or really dark.”

“The only end that matters a jot in gardening is to make a beautiful garden that will give you sustenance and pleasure and to be able to share them with those you love.” Monty Don, Gardening at Longmeadow 2012 pic.twitter.com/nKQFivtAHp

But he is sure that no matter what, people can still create a little something that gives them peace. Monty explained:

“You can still make something rich, rewarding, and creative, and it may not be perfect, but it’s good.”

Who Can Replace Monty Don As The Host Of Gardeners’ World?

There’s no dispute that Monty Don is the show’s star and the host most viewers love. But now that a change is inevitable, it’s time to choose Don’s successor. Apart from him, Adam Frost is well-loved by the viewers as well.

It also looks like he is the most likely candidate for the role because he has moved to the country house and presented some of the programs where he revived gardens. So many fans think that the writing is on the wall regarding his succession.

It was great to welcome Adam Frost onto the garden at Chelsea to film for the BBC's coverage.

However, Monty wants someone else to take over. He said in his interview with The Guardian:

“I would like to think the next Gardeners’ World presenter ideally would be female, would represent either singly, or in multiplicity, the diversity in this country, with at least some urban context.”

He also mused that he is probably the last “middle-class white male” to host the show. As per Monty:

“The world’s changing; we need to change with it. In many ways, I’m likely the last middle-aged, middle-class white male with a large garden doing Gardeners’ World. Which is fine.”

So, who do you think can take over the role of hosting the long-running BBC’s Gardeners’ World when Monty Don inevitably retires? Does your vote go to Adam Frost as well?

Let us know who you choose in the comments below.
