DC Comics revealed the Blue Beetle trailer on its YouTube handle on 4th April 2023, and it has garnered over 8.5 million views already. The trailer mainly shows how Jaime Reyes transforms into the superhero Blue Beetle when a supernatural beetle pops up from a Big Belly Burger box handed over by Jenny.
Fans seem upbeat about it and are excited that Blue Beatle is finally getting screen attention.
Almost at the end of the 2 minutes 50 seconds long trailer, Jaime is seen admiring his props and tools; he compares them to those belonging to Batman. To this, Jaime’s uncle – Rudy, comments that Batman is a fascist. I am sure this statement would lead to several conversations in the DC Comics fan base.
So, is he really a fascist? How are Blue Beetle and Batman related? In this piece, we will be answering these important and exciting questions.
Beginning with Batman, he is one of the most popular and iconic superheroes in modern times. His backstory, charisma, passion for justice, and rich-guy persona have made him stand out from the vast number of superheroes.
Over the years, Batman has evolved into a cult with an immense following and adaptions across several media platforms.
Batman’s unique trait that is worth mentioning is that he functions parallel to the legal system and law enforcement. These are much different from the route adopted by other DC superheroes.
Is Batman Really a Fascist?
Viewers can often witness Batman taking the law into his own hands and executing his own brand of vigilante justice and revenge. Additionally, he also uses intimidation, fear, and other psychological methods to achieve his goals and overwhelm criminals.
Collectively, these attributes have often raised the question/concern that Batman is actually a fascist, as he does not consider legal compliances and authority. Critics also mention that Batman would justify and support a surveillance state, invasion of privacy and that he is the epitome of authoritarianism. He is often seen skirting the line of fascism. For Batman, it is all about himself and his notion of justice.
On the contrary, some fans are convinced that Batman is definitely not a fascist. His system of operation and execution of justice may be different from the legal norms. However, what matters is his intent and ability to do justice and protect the city and its inhabitants.
Moreover, the intimidation methods he has adopted are necessary to match up to the characteristics of the criminals, which threaten the lives of millions of innocent people.
Regarding the fascist comment in the Blue Beetle trailer, many believe that it is merely a throwaway gag at the end of a trailer and should not be taken seriously. It is just to create buzz around the Blue Beetle movie.
So, while there is no clear-cut answer to the question of whether or not Batman is a fascist, it is obvious that his actions and motivations are complex and elaborate. It totally depends on one’s perspective.
Regardless, Batman remains one of the most loved action heroes and has a large fan base across generations.
Moving on to the relationship between Batman and Blue Beetle, it seems this is an evolving partnership. In some versions of DC Comics, such as Batman and Blue Beetle Comic #3 (Brave and the Bold, 3), they are close allies working coherently to fight crime with features of mutual admiration and skill recognition. However, in some of the versions, they have minimal or no interaction at all. Just how Batman operates…
Having said that, they both share a relentless commitment to fight crime, protect innocent lives, and uphold justice.
Both superheroes are loved by their fans irrespective of their relationship with each other. One may be dark, and the other might crack jokes, but all fans admire their zeal to eliminate crime.
