Superhero comics and the Modern Warfare (MW) games have a lot of similarities- dead characters come back to life with every reboot. For example, in the original Modern Warfare trilogy, John ‘Soap’ MacTavish doesn’t have a happy ending.
In 2011’s Modern Warfare 3, Soap dies in front of his team after suffering a fatal wound. But he was brought back in the reboot. Now, with MW3 releasing on November 10, 2023, there’s a buzz in the air that Soap has been killed off again.
But is it true? And how does he die?
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Modern Warfare 3 (2023)
Yes, John ‘Soap’ MacTavish dies in Modern Warfare 3 (2023). During the final and 14th mission, called Trojan Horse, he and Price get ambushed by Konni troops in the London tunnels. How Does John ‘Soap’ MacTavish Die in MW3 (2023)?
John ‘Soap’ MacTavish, originally a rookie in Modern Warfare, had excellent skills and, over installments, became one of the significant characters of the franchise. In Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, he was the main playable hero and became the deuteragonist in MW 2 and MW 3.
In Modern Warfare 3 (2011), he died after suffering a fatal wound. Now, it looks like he has suffered an eerily similar fate in 2023’s MW3 as well. History repeats itself as Soap does die in the upcoming Modern Warfare installment set for a November 10, 2023 release.
In the final and 14th campaign mission, Trojan Horse, the objective is to track a London-based hacker while remaining untraceable. Players control Soap, who utilizes CCTV footage to track the culprit’s location.
Then, Soap and Price get ambushed by Konni troops in a London tunnel while following a buyer. The objective is to fight, get out alive, and finish the buyer. But during the battle, it’s revealed that Makarov is alive.
To thwart Makarov’s plans, Soap and Price infiltrate the subway. The objective here is to avoid the speeding trains while navigating the tunnels. Along the way, players will encounter hostages who need rescuing.
Then, the team gets into combat again with the Konni troops. It’s a challenging arena due to formidable enemies, ambushes, and fatal encounters. Moreover, a bomb threat takes precedence as the team enters the subway tunnels.
Ultimately, Makarov shows up and faces off against the team. But Price and Soap work on defusing the bomb. But this is where tragedy strikes as Makarov suddenly comes up and shoots Soap on the side of his head, and the previous Scottish SAS and Task Force 141 Captain dies.
Gaz and Ghost arrive there, but they fail to save Soap. Makarov also escapes and goes unpunished for now. However, Gaz and Price do manage to disarm the bomb. After this, the team comes together to pay their last respects to Soap and spread his ashes along the coastline.
But he isn’t the only character who dies in the game. In the mid-credits scene, the game makes it clear that General Shephard, who betrayed the team, gets killed by Price.
Also, characters like Ivan, Dena, and Yuri die throughout the story. Modern Warfare 3 (2023) ends with heartfelt emotional lines from everyone. It is the end of an era.
Players are bound to get emotional because Soap was an iconic hero for a long time, and his death will hark back to his 2011 death as well. It’s unknown whether we will get a MW4 next or not.
Modern Warfare 3 (2023) is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Steam, and Battle.Net.
