Death is a part of life. It is dreaded and yet unavoidable. Sadly, it has claimed the life of another young singer who was rising to stardom- Zahara. 

But why did she suddenly die? What was the reason behind her demise? Many fans are questioning her sudden death and raising their eyebrows at the circumstances. 

Zahara, or Bulelwa Mkutukana, passed away at 36 on December 11, 2023, after battling battling liver disease. In 2019, it was revealed that Zahara had been struggling with alcoholism. She used it as a coping mechanism after the death of her brother, Mbuyiseli Mkutukana, in 2014.

Zahara, whose birth name is Bulelwa Mkutukana, emerged as a self-taught guitarist and music sensation, leaving an unforgettable mark on the South African pop music scene. 

Born in 1987, her musical journey began in her formative years, influenced by the songs her mother played on the radio.

Her passion for singing ignited when she became the lead vocalist of her Sunday school choir at the tender age of six. 

Remarkably, Zahara claimed to have never received any formal musical training, emphasizing that she possessed a gift rather than talent.

In 2011, Zahara’s debut album, “Loliwe,” catapulted her to stardom. This masterpiece not only achieved commercial success but also earned her the prestigious Album of the Year award at the South African Music Awards. 

Her unique voice, often likened to artists like India and Tracy Chapman, set her apart in the industry.

Zahara’s musical prowess extended beyond her captivating vocals. She could effortlessly sing in both English and Xhosa, her native language, showcasing her versatility. 

Collaborations with renowned artists like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Robbie Malinga, and Nigerian sensation 2Baba further cemented her status in the African music scene.

In a touching tribute, Zahara had the honor of performing the title track of her debut album for the iconic Nelson Mandela at his home before his passing in 2013. She also composed a heartfelt tribute song in a blend of Xhosa and English to honor the late leader.

While her music touched the hearts of many, Zahara used her platform to address pressing issues, particularly violence against women in South Africa. 

She courageously shared her own experience as a victim during her twenties and advocated for female victims of violence.

Zahara released a total of five albums, each a reflection of her life journey. Her last release, “Nqaba Yam,” debuted in 2021, showcasing her continued commitment to her craft and storytelling through music. 

In 2020, she earned a spot in the prestigious BBC’s 100 Women list, highlighting her influence and impact.

In a radio interview, Zahara humbly expressed that her music was not driven by a quest for recognition but by a desire to provide solace to wounded souls needing healing.

The South African music industry and fans worldwide mourned the loss of a true songstress, Zahara, who died at 36 on December 11, 2023. 

The news of her passing was confirmed by her manager, Oyama Dyosiba, who revealed that Zahara had been battling liver disease and had been hospitalized after experiencing physical pain.

Zahara’s enduring impact on South African music was acknowledged by Zizi Kodwa, South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture.

Minister Kodwa expressed his condolences to the Mkutukana family and the entire music industry. He said (via BBC).

“My deepest condolences to the Mkutukana family and the South African music industry. Government has been with the family for some time now. Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact in South African music.”

In 2019, it was revealed that Zahara had been struggling with alcoholism, which had contributed to her liver disease. 

Her sister, Nomonde, had spoken out about the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that medical professionals had warned that continued drinking could be fatal. The family had rallied around Zahara, seeking to support her on her journey to recovery.

Zahara’s battle with alcoholism was candidly discussed by the singer in a 2019 interview, where she revealed that she had turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism following the loss of her brother, Mbuyiseli Mkutukana, in 2014. 

She admitted that she used alcohol not for joy but as a means to numb her pain, citing fear as a significant barrier to seeking help.

“She was a pure light and an even purer heart in this world. A beacon of hope, gift, and a blessing to us and countless people around her.”
