With the release of One Piece live-action adaptation, the fans are enthralled by the world created by legendary mangaka Eiichiro Oda. While it is no less than a delight for anime fans, the pop culture world has been eagerly waiting for it.
With all that, they all are concerned and curious to know about Monkey D Luffy’s scar on his face. He has a stitch below his left eye and a brutal X burned across his chest that’s difficult to miss.
Many assumed that the scar on Luffy’s face has been a mystery. It left the viewers to assume that it was the result of a childhood misadventure. However, Manga readers know exactly how Luffy’s cheek got blemished.
In Chapter One of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga, the main character, Luffy, hung around the docks and Shanks’ crew quite a lot. Luffy wanted to join the crew as he supposed it would be a joy ride, but his application was rejected as he was too young. However, to become a pirate, he decided to prove himself to the pirates instead. Luffy then took a knife, stabbed himself below the left eye, and left everyone flabbergasted by the act.
Who Gave Luffy the Scar on His Face?
Many assumed that it might have been someone else or any incident that gave him the scar on the face. But proving all the conspiracy theories wrong, it was the young Monkey D. Luffy who stabbed himself to convince Red-Haired Shanks to accept him as a crew mate. He wanted to prove himself worthy of being a pirate.
Following his brave and risky act, he is immediately patched up as everyone drinks to his cavalier attitude.
Luffy met Shanks when he was quite young and was inspired by their positive attitude, their ability to sing and dance when intoxicated, and the strength of their bond. He became friendly with the crew, and upon being rejected to join the crew, Luffy planned to demonstrate the risky stunt.
In the manga, he even mirrors Shanks in his attire, appearance and has the straw hat that was once Shanks had. He started wearing a jacket/cape similar to Shanks’, and he even gave himself a scar on his face near his eye.
In What Episode Did Luffy Get His Scar on His Face?
In the Manga, Luffy got the scar in chapter one of the One Piece series. However, in the anime series, the whole face-stabbing incident was skipped. Episode 1 of the anime starts with Luffy rescuing Koby from evil pirates and encountering his first mate, Roronoa Zoro.
However, it is the only animated rendition of that scene, which was shown in an episode of Luffy special.
How Did Luffy Get the X Scar on His Chest?
Luffy also has another brutal “X” shape burned across his chest, which he received during the Marineford War arc by Akainu when Jinbei was carrying Luffy. It is a reminder of a traumatic event for Luffy that occurred as he watched his brother Ace’s death in front of him.
During the Paramount War, it was simply too much for Luffy to deal with as he went into a comatose state and resigned himself to dying at the hands of Admiral Akainu, Ace’s killer.
To his aid, Luffy’s allies, whom he made during the Impel Down arc, jump into action to rescue him. Here, we see Jimbei, the knight of the sea, carrying Luffy’s unconscious body through the battlefield while trying to escape Akainu and his Magu Magu no mi devil fruit powers.
Other characters, including his past enemies such as Buggy and his contemporary of the worst generation, Trafalgar Law, everyone comes together to rescue Luffy, including the Great Whitebeard Pirates.
This is where we witness one of the greatest powers of Monkey D Luffy, that is, as Mihawk rightly said, “He has the ability to make allies of everyone he meets, and that is the most fearsome ability on the high seas.”
With all that, the fans of One Piece can see the Live-Action adaptation of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew explore a fantastic world of endless oceans and exotic islands on Netflix.
