On September 13, 1977, the satirical soap opera “Soap” made its debut, introducing viewers to Jodie Dallas, a gay character portrayed by then-unknown actor Billy Crystal.

At the time, concerns swirled about how such a groundbreaking move could potentially influence societal morality.

Interestingly, it wasn’t just mainstream audiences who had reservations; the LGBTQ+ community itself feared that Jodie Dallas might succumb to stereotypical portrayals. In some ways, those concerns proved to be prophetic.

I see a lot of talk about how homosexual character broke the mold on some tv show and how its a brave move for network tv. Yet they never give credit to Billy Crystal as the openly gay (not a stereotype gay man) Jodi Dallas on Soap in 1977. This was real breaking mold and brave pic.twitter.com/KC8bn78EPG

Initially, Jodie’s character exhibited traits that aligned with pejorative stereotypes, including his inclination to cross-dress and his struggles with suicidal thoughts.

Furthermore, subsequent storylines that explored his heterosexual relationships weren’t necessarily groundbreaking either.

However, what set “Soap” apart was Billy Crystal’s remarkable and emotionally charged portrayal of Jodie Dallas.

Crystal’s performance transformed potentially problematic plotlines into something palatable and, most importantly, relatable.

He took a character that could have easily been reduced to a caricature and turned him into one of the show’s most admirable and empathetic personalities.

What’s truly remarkable is that Crystal wholeheartedly embraced the role of a gay character during a time when many actors might have hesitated. He committed himself to the character both on and off the stage, demonstrating his dedication to the role’s authenticity.

In a July 1978 interview with the Boca Raton News, Crystal expressed a desire for Jodie to be the season one cliffhanger’s killer, but with a crucial caveat.

Here is what I know about Soap going into it.
-Soap opera parody
-Mona from Who’s The Boss
-Billy Crystal’s character is gay (trans?)
-I remember an episode of Benson where they had a nuclear bomb drill.

He wanted to ensure that the motive behind the character’s actions was not rooted in derogatory stereotypes. He said:

“I just wouldn’t want Jodie (Dallas) to kill for the wrong reason, like a homosexual rage. That would reduce the whole thing to neuroticism.”

Ultimately, Jodie Dallas did not turn out to be the killer.

Instead, the character evolved, becoming more comfortable with his own identity, embracing gay pride, and even providing support to a suicidal lesbian character.

Billy Crystal's gay character in "Soap" was cool, smart & funny and this was so important to me (as a gay teen in the 1970s who was in the closet and afraid to 'come out').

In retrospect, Billy Crystal’s portrayal of Jodie Dallas in “Soap” is a testament to his acting prowess and commitment to portraying a complex and evolving gay character in a groundbreaking television series.

What is your most memorable role of Billy Crystal? Does the character of Jodie Dallas hold up in the 21st century?
