Sorry, “The old Blackpink can’t come to the phone right now… she’s dead.” Quoting the modern-day philosopher Taylor Swift, Blackpink is experiencing a rebirth, leaving behind the old version.
The quartet has gone through many phases in their 7-year-long career so far. They have faced harsh criticisms, they grew from their mistakes, they conquered the world with their charm, and they continued through the hardships only for Blinks.
Jisoo overcame the negative feedback regarding her dancing and stage presence and proved everyone wrong with her talent.
The It-girl Jennie knocked her haters out of the park. She probably has the most haters in K-pop because of how nearly perfect she is. She also overcame the “lazy” allegations by delivering one of the most memorable performances at Coachella.
Rose proved she is the undisputed vocal queen with her single, “On The Ground.” Now, she is taking the fashion industry by storm, getting invitations from top fashion houses, and also is one of the first K-pop idols to grace the MET Gala.
Meanwhile, the youngest Lisa is busy conquering the world. She was recently invited to perform at the Crazy Horse in Paris.
All four members have established their foothold in the industry, becoming some of the most influential artists of the decade. But now their 7-year contract with YG is coming to an end, leaving them at a crossroads.
A couple of days back, we reported the rumors surrounding the members’ status on renewing the contract with YGE. So far, only Rose is confirmed to have renewed her contract with YG Entertainment. The rest of the members are still in talks of negotiations. Some of the rumors included Lisa rejecting an astronomical deal from YGE. In contrast, Jisoo and Jennie were rumored to have joined other agencies.
These speculations led to a freefall of YGE stocks of over 13% in a day. And now, new rumors have surfaced regarding Blackpink members’ decision.
On September 25, a Korean news outlet, NEWS1, reported that the older members of Blackpink, Jisoo, and Jennie would be starting their own labels after leaving YGE. Reportedly, it would be a single-artist agency that will only manage the respective individual members.
However, YGE has denied any validity to the report, stating that the contract renewal deal is still in progress and nothing is final.
Did Blackpink’s Jennie & Jisoo Set Up Their Own Labels?
YGE immediately issued a statement when these reports were published–
“There has been no confirmation made as of yet, regarding the [contract] renewal and future activities of BLACKPINK.”
“Nothing has been decided. We are still negotiating.”
Although the statement is ambiguous, the rumors that Jisoo and Jennie have set up independent agencies are not confirmed.
Regardless, all Blackpink members are required to dedicate six months out of the year to group activities.
Meanwhile, the “BORN PINK” tour has been one of the most successful K-pop concerts of the year, accounting for 350 billion KRW ($265 million) in profits. Apparently, the world tour amassed 2.115 million concert-goers, as reported by YGE.
What is your take on this? Do you think Jisoo and Jennie fare better if they function with self-established agencies?
