Googling the phrase “Angelina Jolie Leg” will lead you to pics of the actress at the 2012 Oscars, where she wore a black dress with a leg slit. However, curiously, it will lead you to something else too.

There are articles upon articles about Angelina Jolie losing her leg as a result of amputation. Reading them all feels surreal, but it does make one wonder if the famous star did lose her leg.

A Facebook photo shows Angelina Jolie in a wheelchair with her right leg amputated. That picture is fake and was originally photoshopped on 25-year-old Chantelle Cox. Paparazzi recently clicked the actress in October 2023. She was healthy and not disabled in them.

Did Hollywood Star Angelina Jolie’s Leg Get Amputated?

A photo of Hollywood star Angelina Jolie is doing the rounds of the internet where she’s seen in a wheelchair with her right leg amputated from the knee and bandaged up. This has made the internet sit up and wonder what’s going on.

Websites like Angelina Jolie Bio have perpetuated the same story in their October 29, 2023 article. Their site stated that the actress lost her leg during a humanitarian mission. It said:

“Angelina Jolie lost her leg in a tragic accident that occurred during a humanitarian mission in a remote region.”

So, has Angelina Jolie’s leg been amputated? The answer is no. The photo making the rounds is fake. Even though the picture looks pretty real, a closer look reveals that the hair was originally silver and has been painted brown.

This is because the original picture belongs to 25-year-old Chantelle Cox. She was clicked in the wheelchair a day after undergoing surgery for four malignant tumors and neurofibromatosis.

As per The Sun, she knows that her picture has been edited to make it look like Jolie was the one who underwent the tragic surgery. She said:

“You couldn’t make this up. As soon as I saw the picture, I knew it was me right away — I wasn’t flattered by it…To be fair, their (fraudsters’) editing skills are unreal. I’ve been offering to sign autographs and pose for photos with my friends.”

The photoshopped picture was first seen on a Facebook post in July 2023. The star hasn’t undergone any amputation, and paparazzi photos from October 2023 while she was in Paris to film her upcoming movie, Maria, show her healthy.

However, the Hollywood veteran has undergone surgery- a double mastectomy and a reconstruction with breast implants in 2013.

As per BBC, Jolie’s doctors estimated that she had a 50% risk of Ovarian cancer and 87% of breast cancer. Jolie had said:

“The truth is I carry a ‘faulty’ gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.”

So, she decided to minimize the risk in a lengthy procedure from February 2013 to April 2013. As a result of the surgery, the risk of cancer has been reduced to 5%.

Did you know celebs are just like us!? Angelina Jolie had a double mastectomy in her 30s after testing positive for a BRCA1 mutation. “I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.” pic.twitter.com/0R28axnTxK

Overall, the fake pic is a hoax targeting famous stars to derive clicks from their fans and the uninformed masses. Misinformation is now more rampant than ever, especially with AI’s unchecked rise.

Twitter has installed some safety measures to root out misinformation, like using the Community Notes feature that fact-checks posts. The platform also demonetizes the posts that Community Notes have debunked.

As such, it’s essential in this day and day to fact-check every piece of information before believing in it.

So, did you fall for the Angelina Jolie hoax, too? Is there any other fake news you sincerely believed was real, only to find out it was fake?
