YG artists can be defined as multi-talented young individuals, thoughtfully curated out of thousands of applicants based on their attitude, drive, skills, and understanding of music & dance.
You can point out a YG alum in a pool of K-pop idols just from their demeanor, appearance, attitude, and swag. It’s a distinct charm that challenges the usual Korean standards. As a result, the YG artists have also been able to break the negative stereotypes and express themselves freely.
It started with the second-generation legendary K-pop group BigBang, who revolutionized Korean music beyond conventional music and pioneered the true essence of hip-hop, punk, EDM, and more.
Several groups that followed in BigBang’s footsteps, including 2NE1, BlackPink, Ikon, Winner, and now Treasure, have at least some fragments of a similar attitude. So fans are aware of what to expect from a YG artist.
So when Treasure debuted, people were excited to see how the 4th generation of YG has evolved. Treasure quickly garnered attention due to their music, rapping, vocals, and stellar stage presence. Each of the ten members has amassed their own following.
However, recently, fans noticed something off with one of the members.
In the past couple of months, Teumes (Treasure’s fandom) observed a shift in the attitude of Choi Hyunsuk, the lead rapper of Treasure. Some were discontent with his drastic transformation with a lip piercing and overall punk styling.
In another incident, fans also noticed Hyunsuk complaining about being an idol on his Vlives while thoroughly enjoying the perks of luxurious spending and the glamorous lifestyle. The sudden shift from the debut Hyunsuk to the present seems to have irked some fans.
Did TREASURE’s Choi Hyunsuk Attitude Change?
The first changes were visibly noticeable during Treasure’s latest schedule. Hyunsuk’s styling has drastically shifted from his debut days.
Over the years, Hyunsuk went on to produce several songs for the group and for other artists, including Lee Hi. He had KOMCA credits even before his debut.
Meanwhile, the young rapper and one of the Treasures leaders continued to carry his group and lead his members with new concepts every comeback. Needless to say, the 24-year-old K-pop idol is evolving gradually. But at the same time, he is also experimenting with his individuality.
Hence, the fans noticed a change in his styling and appearance as he was recently seen with a lip piercing.
During one of his Vlives, fans felt something unusual in his attitude as the idol kept complaining about the dire conditions in which the artists thrive. He felt he was pouring his heart out by being vulnerable with the Treasure Makers. However, some perceived it as hypocrisy, considering Choi indulges in luxury items and enjoys the perks that come with it.
Some fans also pointed out that the lyrics from the song “Gossip” were a clapback at fans who criticized him for his transformation.ย
However, this shift can be considered as his growth and not an attitude change. But yes! The rapper has changed a tad bit.
What Do Fans Think About Choi Hyunsuk?
One of the commenters articulated their opinion, statingโ
“This is so absurd that it’s hilarious. Everytime he went on live streaming, he complained about everything, whined about how tough it is for him, speaking negatively about everything. He can’t handle even a few crazy haters’ comments and would complain to his fans about them. He did this for a few weeks and then stop showing up on Weverse. When he came back he comes back to show off his lip piercing and is now fiercely interacting on Weverse, which is laughable.”
Another fan responded to Hyunsuk when he recommended to listen to ‘Gossi’ โ
“Hyunsuk… all Treasure Makers (TREASURE fandom) know that you don’t recommend songs like this, capturing a screenshot. It doesn’t even feel like you really wanted to recommend it because you like the song, and it’s a bit disappointing. I wish you had opened the door to November with songs that you genuinely love. It seems unavoidable to feel this way.”
Some fans were disappointed and felt that Choi Hyunsuk had been ungrateful towards his fans. The comment explainedโ
“It’s not just because of the piercing… Fans have been wanting a calmer styling from the very beginning, but for over a year and eight months, he’s been going with the styling he wants and even sporting a man bun style. We never said anything directly about it but a few days ago, he’s been saying he’s really struggling these days and he said he can’t do what he wants in the group. He said he doesn’t like the style from his debut-era. He would look at the Namu Wiki page and he asked fans to even change his profile photo because he doesn’t like it. He asked fans if they would like him no matter what, so fans thought he was really struggling so we were supportive of him. But then the next day he said he was stressed so he got a piercing. So fans complained to him. And that same morning he posted the lyrics to that song. I really think TREASURE members have it easy compared to other idols. If other idols did what they’re doing, they would have been canceled,” “I don’t think he wants fans, he wants servants and an ATM,” and “He is really taking everything for granted.”
