When it comes to Super Bowl adverts, you never quite know what to expect. After all, brands have a short time to capture the attention of potential customers watching from their homes.
This year, Michael Cera stole the spotlight with a quirky 30-second spot for CeraVe skincare. But did he actually play a role in creating the product?
No, Michael Cera did not create CeraVe. Despite his convincing performance in the 30-second Super Bowl ad on February 12, 2024, the skincare brand clarified on Instagram that dermatologists, not Cera himself, developed their products.
Is Michael Cera the Creator of Cerave?
“I’m Michael Cera, and human skin is my passion—which is why I developed this,” Cera declares in the Super Bowl commercial, holding up a jar of CeraVe’s Moisturizing Cream.
He then humorously asks, “Can skin truly be this moisturized?” while massaging a second version of himself, adding to the surreal humor of the ad.
The commercial takes viewers on a psychedelic journey, with Cera teasingly promising time and time again that he helped to create the skincare line. Many viewers also bought into it since the brand’s name is similar to the actor’s last name.
However, it becomes apparent in the ad that the dermatologists in the boardroom weren’t impressed with his performance, as the tagline humorously read: “Developed with dermatologists. Not Michael Cera.”
So, despite Michael Cera’s convincing and hilariously dramatic acting, he didn’t create the fan-favorite skincare products.
CeraVe clarified once again on Instagram that their products are developed by dermatologists, not Cera. Also, the brand itself was founded by Tom Allison in 2005, and again not by Cera.
However, the actor’s dedication to the bit didn’t stop there.
He was spotted carrying large bottles of the product around New York and even appeared on “The Really Good Podcast,” claiming to have “skin in the game” with the beauty brand.
Although Michael Cera’s involvement in CeraVe may have been nothing more than a clever marketing ploy, the strategic partnership between the actor and the skincare company was undeniably brilliant.
It left a lasting impression on viewers and showcased Cera’s comedic talent in a memorable Super Bowl campaign.
