The Marvel Cinematic Universe is no stranger to plot twists and surprises, but recent buzz about another black actor taking over as Kang the Conqueror might be the biggest yet.

Reports claim an unknown actor from Birmingham, England, has been cast as the new MCU villain, sparking widespread speculation among fans and media alike.

Jonathan Majors had been poised to become Marvel’s next major antagonist after starring in Loki and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

However, his journey took an unexpected turn in March 2023 when he faced assault charges and was later found guilty. This legal hiccup forced Marvel to rethink their plans for Kang, considering both replacement actors and entirely new villainous arcs.

But here’s the bottom line-

Marvel has not replaced Jonathan Majors as Kang with Keenan Clarke in the MCU. Despite rumors and speculative reports, there has been no official announcement from Marvel Studios about casting a new actor for the role of Kang the Conqueror. The studio is currently re-evaluating its plans for the character and the direction of the storyline, especially in light of Majors’ legal issues.

How Did This Rumor Start & Why The Keenan Clarke Rumor Doesn’t Hold Water?

The buzz about Clarke originates from a press release by Z News Service, a relatively obscure PR agency, which claimed Clarke was cast as Kang. This press release also reached various outlets, including Markets Insider, though it raised immediate red flags among discerning fans.

Clarke’s lack of major acting credits, coupled with Marvel’s typical discretion in casting announcements, cast serious doubts on the legitimacy of this news.

Marvel Studios is known for its tight-lipped approach to casting announcements, especially for pivotal roles like Kang the Conqueror. Major casting news usually comes through high-profile events or official Marvel channels, not through minor PR services on a quiet Monday.

The notion that Marvel would entrust such a significant reveal to an unknown actor with no substantial credits is far-fetched.

Furthermore, this situation echoes past instances of guerrilla marketing where unknown actors falsely claimed to land major roles, aiming to boost their profiles. This strategy rarely succeeds, as major studios prefer experienced actors with proven track records for their flagship projects.

The authenticity of the Keenan Clarke report is further undermined by the sources from which it emerged.

A February 2024 report by The Hollywood Reporter indicated that Marvel Studios was revising their future plans, potentially sidelining the Kang character altogether. They mentioned the possibility of renaming the planned Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which aligns with rumors of Marvel downplaying Kang’s role moving forward.

As it stands, Marvel’s next steps with Kang remain shrouded in mystery. The studio’s pivot away from Jonathan Majors, driven by legal controversies, signifies a broader reevaluation of their narrative strategy.

Whether this means introducing a new actor or phasing out the character, Marvel’s decision will be crucial for the franchise’s direction.

In the realm of superhero movies, casting rumors are commonplace, but the Clarke speculation seems more like a product of wishful thinking and clever self-promotion than an actual Marvel strategy.

So, what do you think about these casting rumors? Do you believe Marvel should stick with Kang or introduce a new villain entirely?

Averagebeing’s Take: Marvel faces a significant challenge with the legal troubles surrounding Jonathan Majors. Retaining him may not be viable, yet recasting risks alienating the audience. The most prudent course may be to abandon the Kang storyline entirely and introduce a new antagonist.
