At 98, Jimmy Carter, former US president, enrolled in hospice care. He wants to spend his last days in his peaceful home in Georgia, not under hospital management.
Carter’s health has seen a steady decline in the past few years. However, that is entirely natural, given his age. Of course, this has led to many people being nervous about his health status.
Three months into hospice care, Carter is still as joyful as ever and enjoys regular servings of frozen desserts. Jimmy Carter is the longest-living US president and has been with his wife for 70 years. Their son commented, “Their faith is really grounding in this moment. In that way, it’s as good as it can be.”
When Jimmy Carter first made his hospice decision, it brought media attention to his presidency period as well as the humanitarian work he participated in. He is the co-founder of The Carter Center, a non-profit organization that attempts to bring peace worldwide.
Did Jimmy Carter Have Children?
Jimmy Carter is married to his wife, Rosalynn Smith; the 97 and 95 years old have enough experience with each other and are inseparable. They were married in 1946, and both used to volunteer for philanthropy activities that helped the less fortunate.
Jimmy Carter and his wife have four children. The three sons are named Jack, Kames III, and Donnel. Their daughter is named Amy. They have nine grandsons as well, one of whom has passed away. In addition, they have three granddaughters and 13 great-grandchildren.
In 2022, Carter and Smith became the longest-wed presidential couple. Their eldest son, Jack Carter, was the Democratic candidate for US Senate in Nevada in 2006. Another of his sons, Jason Carter, is a former Georgia state senator.
The former president’s health severely declined during the Coronavirus pandemic, due to which his public appearances were limited. Way before that, in 2015, a tiny malignant growth was removed from his liver. Soon afterward, he announced that his cancer had metastasized as melanoma was found in his liver and brain.
He underwent treatment with an experimental drug that ensured all signs of cancer were eliminated. Carter also has a family history of cancer involving both his parents and all of his siblings.
In 2019, Carter broke his hip due to a fall at home and underwent surgery. Other minor injuries were also sustained on multiple occasions.
In the following years, Carter was seen in and out of hospitals for various reasons like forehead injury, pelvic fracture, bleeding, urinary tract infection, and more. In February 2023, the Carter Center declared that the former president had decided to “spend his remaining time at home with his family.” Carter had asked Biden to deliver his eulogy.
Carter can be called a man of steel for his robust nature and is an example and idol for many. Let’s hope the former president can spend the rest of his days in familial peace, just like he deserves.
