Halloween is the only holiday that teaches the children about business. Don’t consider it a child’s play; ‘candy’ is the currency, ‘trick’ is their skill, and ‘treat’ is their profit. The holiday is a serious business for kids of all age groups.
Draping themselves in the most unique costumes, getting into the character, and pitching their cuteness door-to-door is an early rite of passage for kids to understand the worth of the thing they value.
Parents accompany their children, teaching them how to greet their neighbors while asking politely for candies and then expressing gratitude. But the following case completely destroys the essence of the spooky entrepreneurial holiday and displays shameful parenting.
The lead guitarist of country rock band Whiskey Myers, Cody Tate, uploaded a reel on Instagram showing three adult women rushing over to his door with four to five children. They then proceed to rack up their bags with the candies that Tate put out for kids so that he is not disturbed by the ringing bell.
The lady in a black hoodie was even seen filling her pockets with the remaining candy. This caused an uproar, and people speculated that they were immigrants based on their dialect.
Did Adults Steal an Entire Bucket of Halloween Candy from Someone’s House?
Cody Tate is a musician and prefers to work from his home in solitude and peace. The lead guitarist of the country rock band Whiskey Myers wanted an unbothered, undisturbed evening on Halloween night so that he could enjoy his time without the constant buzzing. And I absolutely get him as an adult; kids are cute and all, but we do have a social battery.
To avoid interacting with kids every other minute on Halloween, Mr. Tate decided to put out the candy. And after a thorough investigation (i.e., reading his Instagram post caption), Mr. Tate was planning to catch up on the Texas Rangers match in the World Series.
He clearly mentioned in the sign to take only one candy. But after a day, he posted another video of his doorbell cam footage, stirring a global uproar.
In the video, around three women are seen running to his door like a moth to the flame. As soon as they saw the unattended candy, the freeloaders filled their pockets and sacks.
Netizens pointed out that these women are teaching their kids how to steal and inculcating harmful ideologies at such a young age.
The woman in black was criticized heavily for her smug smile and for encouraging the kids to empty the entire bucket.
Another crucial thing the netizens noted was that the people in the video were speaking in a foreign language, most probably Spanish. And thus, the stealing incident branched out into a political discourse.
Halloween Becomes Political: The Case of Adults Stealing Candies on Halloween
Several netizens flooded the comment section, stating that the family must be immigrants (considering their accents).
The implication was that the lenient immigration laws under President Biden’s administration that award legal status to immigrants in the 2021 proposed bill had caused a spike in crimes and misdemeanors.
However, there are no reports that confirm that the family is illegal immigrants. Yet, the discourse is purely based on profiling and speculations.
Here are a few tweets on the Halloween Heist–
What is your verdict on this case? Do you agree with the immigration discourse? Should the mother only be criticized because she was stealing and not because she spoke another language?
