Alcohol laws in Texas are such a vast criterion that you might break some unless you are aware of them. The rules for selling liquor, beer, wine, and mixed beverages differ, confusing most people.

The state’s regulations of alcohol have changed vastly in the last few years, and the recent signing of HB 1518 by Gov. Greg Abbott has made Texans sigh in relief. The hours for beer and wine shops to remain open in Texas have changed to accommodate citizens.

Liquor sales are still banned on Sundays and some major holidays, but you can now enjoy drinks in wineries, bars, restaurants, and even festivals and fairs.

This brings us to the question of the timings and regulations on the different types of alcoholic beverages sold in Texas, and we hope that the listed guidelines will help you on some especially fun Sundays

When and How Can You Buy Liquor on Sundays in Texas?

Liquor is not allowed to be sold in package stores in Texas; however, wine and beer can be bought from 10 a.m. to midnight on Sundays. Hotels and bars can serve alcohol from 10 a.m. to noon on Sundays if it is accompanied by food.

A bar or restaurant which is not affiliated with a hotel can only sell alcoholic beverages from noon to midnight on Sunday but from 10 a.m. if accompanied by food.

Festivals, fairs, or even concerts can sell liquor from 10 a.m. to noon on Sundays if they have proper permits.

Only 35 states allow Sunday retail spirit sales; Texas Package Store Assoc. did studies showed 7 vs 6 days had no sales increase, but higher costs for payroll, utilities, etc, vs Arkansas (NO alcohol sold in most of state on Sundays); beer/wine available almost statewide

When Can You Buy Beer and Wine in Texas?

Convenience or grocery stores can sell beer and alcohol from 7 a.m. to midnight, Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, they are sold from 7 a.m. โ€“ 1 a.m., and on Sundays, they can be sold from 10 a.m. to midnight.

Wineries are open from 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to midnight on Sundays.

When Can You Buy Liquor from Package/Liquor Stores?

You can buy liquor in Texas from Mondays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Selling alcohol is prohibited on Sundays, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. If any of the stated holidays fall on a Sunday, then the next Monday would be observed as a dry day.

Actually, there are few states that allow retail spirit sales even past 10 PM, so Texas isnโ€™t unique, vs Pennsylvania (TOTALLY state run stores w/special IDโ€™s) or Arkansas (NO alcohol sold in most of state on Sundays); beer/wine available virtually statewide till at least 12 AM

Is Texas a Dry State?
