Curious minds, gather ’round! There’s been quite a buzz in the world of entertainment involving none other than the talented Ayo Edebiri and the queen of pop herself, Jennifer Lopez.
Audio clips of Edebiri saying some eyebrow-raising things have surfaced, which has made fans of Lopez quite mad. But what’s all the fuss about?
In 2020, Ayo Edebiri joined the “Scam Goddess” podcast, where host Laci Mosley controversially criticized Jennifer Lopez’s career. Edebiri added to the debate, questioning Lopez’s vocal abilities, implying she often didn’t sing in her songs. Hosting “Saturday Night Live” on February 3, 2024, Edebiri acknowledged her past comments and advocated for online responsibility.
What’s the Beef Between Ayo Edebiri and Jennifer Lopez?
Picture this – “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri, at the age of 28, is set to host “Saturday Night Live,” guess who’s joining the party as the musical guest? None other than the sensational Jennifer Lopez.
Sounds like a star-studded night, right? Well, here’s where things get interesting.
Time to travel back to 2020 when Ayo Edebiri made a guest appearance on the “Scam Goddess” podcast hosted by Laci Mosley. That’s when the storm began.
Mosley, not mincing her words, declared that Lopez’s “whole career is one long scam” and even claimed that the singer seemed blissfully oblivious to the critiques hurled her way.
Edebiri jumped into the fray and dropped a bombshell by suggesting that Lopez wasn’t quite the vocal powerhouse we all thought she was. In her own words (via Variety):
“Well, that’s the thing — she thinks she’s on multiple tracks, but it’s not her. I think she thinks that she’s still good, even though she’s not singing for most of these songs.”
She didn’t stop there. Edebiri continued:
“A lot of the write-ups of the songs will be like, ‘J.Lo didn’t have time to make it to the studio.’ Like, ‘J.Lo was busy.’ Doing what? Not singing, obviously.”
Just when you thought it couldn’t get juicier, Edebiri confessed to being “fascinated” with J.Lo’s career and even “read up on” theories suggesting that Lopez might not have sung all her tracks.
The controversy had officially landed, and it was here to stay.
However, while hosting “Saturday Night Live” on February 3, Edebiri didn’t shy away from addressing the elephant in the room – her past comments about Jennifer Lopez.
In a game show sketch, where Kenan Thompson forced contestants to confront their not-so-friendly online behavior, Edebiri acknowledged her previous remarks.
She quipped (via Variety):
“Okay. We get it. It’s wrong to leave mean comments, or post comments just for clout, or run your mouth on a podcast, and you don’t consider the impact because you’re 24 and stupid. But I think I speak for everyone when I say from now on, we’re going to be a lot more thoughtful about what we post online.”
Jennifer Lopez, however, remained mostly silent during the SNL episode, not appearing in any sketches.
However, she did share a warm moment with Edebiri in a promo video released before the episode. In the clip, Lopez showered Edebiri with compliments, saying, “I love your show,” to which Edebiri responded, “I love your everything.”
While the controversy brought some tension to the SNL stage, it seems that Ayo Edebiri has acknowledged her previous comments, possibly extending an olive branch to J.Lo.
But as for the ultimate truth behind the theories and critiques about Jennifer Lopez’s singing career, the jury is still out.
Do you think Ayo Edebiri’s comments were meant in jest, or do they hint at a deeper critique of the music industry? Should celebrities be held accountable for their public remarks, even if made in the past?
