Ever been thumbing through your Facebook feed, immersed in the digital digest of friends’ updates, viral memes, and the odd ad or two, when suddenly your scrolling session is accompanied by an unexpected soundtrack?

No, your phone isn’t eavesdropping on a nearby aviary, nor have you accidentally triggered some hidden feature designed for ornithologists. It’s something far simpler yet equally puzzling, especially for the uninitiated.

How awkward would that be? – You are trying to access Facebook in a meeting or during school, and then, out of the blue, a whistle or chirp emanates from your device. At first, you might dismiss it as a fluke, a figment of your imagination perhaps. But as it persists, curiosity mounts.

What’s behind this bizarre auditory phenomenon? Is Facebook turning into a digital bird sanctuary, or is there a more logical explanation? Let’s dive in and unravel this mystery.

Facebook’s latest update has introduced a chirping sound during scrolling, aiming to make the browsing experience more engaging. However, opinions on this feature are mixed, as users did not like the sound.

Why Is Facebook Chirping When I Scroll?

The appearance of whistle/chirping noises while scrolling through Facebook has sparked amusement, confusion, and irritation among users. So, what’s the deal?

According to insiders and a sprinkle of social media sleuthing, this auditory addition is the result of Facebook’s latest update. The intent behind these subtle sounds is to make your scrolling experience more dynamic and, dare we say, more engaging.

The sound, which occurs during scrolling, is part of a new update to make the mobile experience ‘more engaging and interactive– this move by Facebook is designed to sprinkle a little extra sensory stimulation into your social media mix. But has this attempt to serenade our scroll been a hit or a miss?

For some, this digital birdsong has added a quirky charm to their browsing sessions, a gentle nudge reminding them of the platform’s constant presence. Yet, for others, it’s an unwelcome distraction, an unnecessary embellishment in an already crowded digital landscape.

@facebook Come get your mobile app. It’s broken. My sensory issues can’t handling this constant chirping glitch. #facebook

The divergence in user sentiment highlights a broader conversation about the role of sound in digital experiences and how subtle cues can significantly impact our engagement with technology.

Moreover, the rationale behind these chirping sounds taps into a larger trend of sensory marketing – using sounds to evoke emotions or actions. In its quest for continual innovation, Facebook seems to be exploring how auditory elements can enhance user interaction, perhaps hoping to make the platform feel more alive and more immediate.

Reflecting on the Chirps: How To Turn Off The Sound Effect?

If you are not much of a bird person, follow these steps to turn off the chirping–

  1. Open Facebook on iPhone.
  2. Tap on the burger menu (three horizontal lines) on the bottom-right corner.
  3. Find the “Settings & Privacy” and tap on it.
  4. Tap on “Settings” and find the “Media” option.
  5. Choose the “Sounds” option and switch off the toggle corresponding to “In-App Sounds.”

From a little girl who wrote school plays and made her friends act in them to an adolescent who got into dark humor, Yashica has built her own universe of peculiar characters inspired by great cinema. She has imbibed the philosophies of David Fincher's characters but lives like the eccentricity of Phoebe Waller Bridge's women. Her metahumans are those who can use the power of words to create an elixir of emotions and bring them to life on screen. Jordan Peele, Issa Rae, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Ilana-Abbi, Raj-DK, Anurag Kashyap, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and others are her Marvel's Avengers. With over two years of experience as a content writer, her writing pieces are well-researched, with a sprinkle of her opinions/inferences that keep the audiences engaged. She is still exploring more on the anime scene but is highly intrigued by it. The cinephile in her makes her appreciate the intricacies of filmmaking. You will get a lot more insight into it in her articles and thoroughly enjoy her explanations. Well, someday, you might see Yashica as one of the writers for a movie-- it's her ultimate dream!
