The world recently mourned the loss of Dexter Scott King, the youngest son of the iconic civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dexter’s passing has left many wondering about his family and whether he had any children to carry on his legacy.

So, did he have children?

Dexter Scott King’s life came to a close on January 22, 2024, following a courageous battle with prostate cancer, confirmed by his family and the King Center. He battled prostate cancer bravely, but in the end, the disease took its toll. His passing leaves a void in the civil rights movement and the hearts of many who admired his family’s legacy.

Born on January 30, 1961, in Atlanta, Georgia, Dexter was the third child of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King.

Dexter once shared his memories of that fateful day, recalling how he and his brother learned of their father’s shooting while watching TV, describing it as “a very chaotic and traumatic period.”

Dexter King was a man who wore many hats.

He married Leah Weber King in a private ceremony in July 2013, and together, they built a life filled with love and support. However, they did not have any children.

The King Center emphasized their deep bond, akin to that of Dexter’s parents, and the love they shared throughout their journey together.

Dexter’s life was intertwined with his father’s remarkable legacy.

He co-authored a book titled “Growing Up King: An Intimate Memoir,” offering an inside perspective on what being part of such an influential family was like.

He also took on the role of his father in the 2002 film, “The Rosa Parks Story,” showcasing his commitment to preserving his father’s memory and message.

Beyond his family’s civil rights work, Dexter was a passionate advocate for animal rights and a vocal vegan.

The King Center has announced the passing of Dexter King, the youngest son of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King.

King was 62 and had prostate cancer.

Dexter’s impact extended beyond his advocacy work. He served as the chairman of The King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, a nonprofit founded by his mother in the wake of his father’s assassination.

Additionally, he held the position of president of the King Estate, actively managing his father’s intellectual property and legacy.

As we remember Dexter Scott King, we reflect not only on his family’s extraordinary contributions to civil rights but also on his unique path in preserving that legacy.

I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of my dear brother, Dexter King. I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to his wife, siblings, and family. May God bless them during this difficult time.
