Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) was the protagonist of the first three Transformers films. But Shia left the franchise because he thought his character had reached a dead end. Also, he wanted to take his career on a different trajectory that veered away from blockbuster films. As for the character, in Transformers: The Last Knight, it was revealed that Sam had died.
Why Was Sam Witwicky/ Shia LaBeouf Removed From The Transformers Franchise?
During the press tour for “Transformers: Dark Of The Moon,” Shia LaBeouf unequivocally declared his departure from the franchise, a decision that has remained steadfast to this day, with no sign of a cameo or return.
LaBeouf’s reasoning stemmed from his belief that the character of Sam Witwicky had exhausted his narrative potential, fearing that any return would only result in staleness.
This sentiment was articulated in numerous interviews, such as his conversation with The Guardian, where he candidly said:
“I just don’t think right now there’s anywhere to take Sam. I’ve learned a great deal from Michael, as a person, as an actor, as a person on set. And it’s not that I don’t enjoy working with Michael. I love working with Michael. I would do any movie Michael wants to do. I just don’t think there’s anywhere to take it with Sam.”
Subsequently, LaBeouf made it abundantly clear that he was steering his career in a different direction and couldn’t see major blockbuster productions in it.
Furthermore, in a 2018 interview with Esquire, he went as far as to label the Transformers movies as “irrelevant.”
He highlighted iconic films like “Raging Bull” and “Easy Rider” as exemplars of meaningful storytelling while characterizing Transformers as the polar opposite of his life’s purpose.
With such a damning assessment, it becomes difficult to fathom his return to the Transformers saga. Thus, sealing the fate of any potential future involvement in the franchise.
What Happened To Sam Witwicky In The Transformers Franchise?
Transformers: The Last Knight provided answers to the enigma surrounding Sam Witwicky.
In a meticulously crafted scene, the exposition master, Sir Edmund Burton (Anthony Hopkins), reveals to Oxford professor Vivian Wembley (Laura Haddock) that she is the last descendant of the “Witwiccan” lineage, directly linked to Merlin (Stanley Tucci).
With a certain irony, Burton educates Vivian about her own family tree, uncovering the illustrious history of the Witwicky family. Astonishingly, Vivian, despite her academic prowess in medieval studies, had remained unaware of her extraordinary heritage.
The pivotal revelation comes when Burton discloses that she is the sole surviving heir of Merlin, entrusted with the responsibility of wielding Merlin’s staff to thwart an impending Cybertronian assault.
This revelation implies a sobering truth – if Vivian is the last of the Witwickys, then Sam Witwicky is dead or at least assumed to be so.
His demise and the events following “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” remain shrouded in mystery, marking an unexpected and somewhat inglorious conclusion for a character who once stood as the franchise’s main protagonist.
