Chuck Todd is one of this age’s most reputed, acclaimed, and controversial journalists. He has been lauded and awarded for his journalism multiple times.

He and “Meet The Press” go hand-in-hand. It always has been for about nine years. But why is someone else in his place? Also, where is Todd now?

Journalist Chuck Todd has left NBC’s Meet The Press. He stated he was trying to find a work-life balance but was still hungry and ambitious in his field. Kirsten Welker has succeeded him. As per the NBC News website, he is the chief political analyst and hosts “The Chuck ToddCast.”

Why Did Chuck Todd Leave Meet The Press?

Today we close our show with an announcement from @chucktodd:

"While today is not my final show, this will be my final summer here at Meet the Press. … I am really proud of what this team and I have built over the last decade." pic.twitter.com/sgeUcNR3C5

Chuck Todd, the familiar face of NBC’s Meet The Press, announced his departure on June 2023 from the iconic political talk show after nine years of dedicated service.

This decision marked a significant transition in the career of a seasoned journalist who has been a mainstay at NBC since 2007.

Todd’s time at the network has been marked by numerous accolades, including multiple Emmy Awards for Outstanding Coverage of Breaking Stories, notably the “Miracle on the Hudson” in 2009.

In a candid interview with The New York Times in June, Todd revealed why he decided to step away from the high-profile role he had occupied for nearly a decade. He stated:

“I’ve let work consume me for nearly 30 years… I can’t remember the last time I didn’t wake up before five or six am, and as I’ve watched too many friends and family let work consume them before it was too late, I promised my family I wouldn’t do that.”

So, Todd recognized the need for a change to honor his promise to his family.

Furthermore, Todd articulated his growing discomfort with the relentless spotlight that comes with such a prominent media role. It was a self-aware recognition of the emotional and mental toll that years in the spotlight can exact on anyone.

He told the Jewish Insider:

“It’s a spotlight that can have a glare to it, and I think there’s only so much time anybody can do it and handle it. I didn’t want to get to the point where I was too jaded or cynical, and I was getting close. I’ll admit it.”

That said, the thing I'm most concerned about as a wildcard … Taiwan." pic.twitter.com/eX16LugwZw

Personal reasons also played a pivotal role in Todd’s decision to withdraw from Meet The Press. The loss of his father at the age of 40 when Todd was just 16, coupled with the realization that his own youngest son was now the same age, weighed heavily on his mind.

He had witnessed colleagues and acquaintances meet untimely ends while pursuing their careers in journalism, and it was a sobering reminder of life’s fragility.

Despite his departure from Meet The Press, Chuck Todd made it clear that he was not done with journalism and could still see himself going on.

Todd said:

“I still have a lot of ambition. I still want to be a part of the solution and what’s wrong with media consumption and journalism in the 21st century.”

So Todd’s career in journalism may take on a different form in the future, but his passion for the field remains undiminished.

As a veteran Washington journalist, Todd believes there are other avenues through which he can make a meaningful impact on journalism and media consumption.

His decision to leave Meet The Press is not a farewell to the profession but rather a recalibration of his career path.

Chuck Todd’s final broadcast for the show was scheduled for September, marking the end of an era in his career and signaling the beginning of a new chapter where he seeks to contribute to journalism and media in fresh and innovative ways.

“Meet The Press,” an enduring American political broadcasting institution. It boasts an impressive 76-season history dating back to 1947.

In a historic moment, Kirsten Welker has succeeded Chuck Todd, becoming the first black journalist to anchor the show and only the second woman in its legacy.

Welker assumed her role on September 17. Chuck Todd now serves as NBC News Chief Political Analyst and hosts “The Chuck ToddCast,” as stated on the NBC News website’s “Meet The Press” section.

His bio states:

“Chuck Todd is NBC News’ chief political analyst. He’s the former moderator of the network’s flagship Sunday public affairs program, Meet the Press.”
