Mickey Rooney was known as a musical prodigy. That man was nothing less than a savant who had mastery over various instruments. 

But many still question all the times he said he could play the piano. Could he really play the instrument? Or was someone else aiding him from behind the scenes?

Yes, Mickey Rooney did play the piano. He started getting piano lessons at 6, and at 7, he debuted at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles. He showed his piano-playing talents on shows like “The Mickey Rooney Show” and “The Dean Martin Show.” Sadly, he passed away on April 6, 2014.

Mickey Rooney, born Joseph Yule Jr. on September 23, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York, was a renowned actor, singer, and comedian who left a lasting mark on the entertainment industry. 

His career featured memorable roles in films like The Hardy Boys and Girls, National Velvet, and The Black Stallion, along with numerous appearances on television shows. 

Sadly, he passed away on April 6, 2014.

Mickey Rooney, a true Renaissance entertainer, possessed a remarkable array of talents that spanned far beyond the silver screen. 

Among his many skills, he was a virtuoso musician who excelled in playing numerous instruments, including the trumpet, banjo, trombone, guitar, harmonica, drums, accordion, and organ, in addition to his mastery of the piano.

Rooney’s musical journey began at a tender age, as he demonstrated prodigious talent, starting piano lessons at just six years old.

His professional debut occurred at the age of seven when he took to the piano at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, marking the inception of a lifelong dedication to music. 

He consistently played the piano throughout his illustrious career, even composing and performing some of his compositions with his band.

Rooney’s repertoire encompassed an eclectic mix of classic show tunes like “I Got Rhythm” and “Bye Bye Blackbird” and beloved standards such as “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “It Had To Be You.”

His musical prowess extended to improvisation, where he frequently delighted audiences with captivating ragtime improvisations or themes from iconic films.

Rooney’s profound love for music remained a constant throughout his life, evidenced by his extensive collection of rare instruments housed in his home studio. 

His piano skills played a significant role in several of his films, including standout performances in “National Velvet” and “The Black Stallion.”
