You must have heard about plenty of hit Netflix titles like One Piece, Squid Game, Wednesday, etc. But chances are that you might not have heard much about a show called Virgin River.
But that’s okay. Fans of the romantic drama that has been going on for five seasons now are in love with it. Also, not to mention the new viewers discovering the show every day.
But all of them have one question- is season 6 coming?
Yes, Netflix renewed Virgin River for season 6 on May 18, 2023. Production on the shoe was expected to begin soon after, but it stopped due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike. On October 10, the writers’ room converged to start again. At this pace, season 6 is expected to premiere sometime in late 2024 or early 2025.
What Is Virgin River About?
The Netflix show that has been running for five seasons now is based on the romance novels by Robyn Carr. Premiering in 2019, Virgin River is led by Nurse practitioner Mel Monroe, who escapes from the big city life and finds herself in northern California.
In the small town, she sees idyllic and breathtaking views that make one feel like time had stopped years ago. But a change of pace isn’t the only thing she gets from that town.
Monroe also meets former U.S. Marine and current bar owner Jack Sheridan. A complicated romance follows with lots of drama involving storylines of various other characters.
Will There Be Season 6 of Virgin River?
Yes, Netflix has renewed Virgin River for season 6 on May 18, 2023. Writing for season 6 was scheduled to begin soon after. But, the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes put a stop to it.
But now that the strikes are over, writing work can resume as expected. In fact, on October 10, 2023, the show’s official account posted a pic of the writer’s room with everyone. The caption was:
“Thrilled to have our writing team back in action, diving into Season 6!”
As such, it’s expected that season 6 can premiere in late 2024 or early 2025. But it certainly won’t be before that. Even Rich Keith, the executive producer of the show, said in an Instagram post in September:
“All I want for Christmas is my two… [unions] to get a fair deal from the AMPTP. If they don’t hurry up there won’t be any #VirginRiver on @Netflix until 2025…”
So, it will be a long wait before season 6 comes along. Thankfully, there are a couple more episodes to tide fans over.
Has Virgin River Season 5 Premiered?
When Netflix renewed Virgin River for season 6, the 5th season hadn’t yet premiered. However, season 5 did see the light of day when the first ten episodes premiered on September 7, 2023.
But this was only Part 1. Part 2, which consists of 2 Christmas episodes, will premiere on November 30, 2023. They are titled- “The More the Merrier” and “Father Christmas.”
But what about the future of the show beyond season 6? That depends entirely on viewership numbers.
