The perfect ending for a reformed god: Is it the end of the MCU road for Tom Hiddleston?
Loki season 2 is over, and I am flabbergasted with the ending. Many think it’s tragic, some think it’s funny, but almost everyone wants to see more of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki.
But will Hiddleston return to play the character after that season 2 ending? In fact, now one has to ask if the character will return to the MCU again as well.
Warning: This article contains spoilers for the finale of Loki season 2.
There’s no official confirmation from Marvel Studios whether Loki season 2 was the last appearance of Tom Hiddleston as the titular character. It’s still possible for Loki to return in future Marvel projects like Avengers: Secret Wars.
How Did Loki Season 2 End?
In the finale of Loki season 2, Tom Hiddleston’s god of mischief, along with Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), O.B. (Ke Huy Quan), and Mobius (Owen Wilson), tried to prevent the loom from collapsing while also trying to save all the timelines.
But Loki fails to do so. The Loom explodes as it fails to handle the new timelines, and the branches crumble in Loki’s hands. But instead of letting go, he infuses them with magic and life.
The god of mischief pulls and drags the branches together before marching towards a throne with them. They all form into a cape. He sits on the throne, and the camera pans out to show everyone that Loki is now in the middle of the time stream.
Then the major reveal comes- his throne is the Yggdrasil, the World Tree. The Yggdrasil is the home of all reality and the center connecting the nine realms. So basically, Loki is not the god of mischief or lies now.
He is the god who maintains and controls the timelines.
Are Tom Hiddleston’s Days of Playing Loki Over?
Loki’s character arc over the films and shows is complete in a sense. He began as a petty, uncaring, reckless god who thought he deserved to rule over everyone. In the end, he finally got what he wanted.
But by the end of season 2, he is stripped of his arrogance and hubris. Ultimately, as a man, he forms genuine connections with Mobius and Sylvie. When he sits on the throne, it’s a burden he chooses.
There’s no glee in it. But now, Loki has his glorious purpose. It’s a great ending and a perfect goodbye to him if Marvel wanted to put a full stop to the character.
Even Tom Hiddleston thinks the ending is perfect for Loki and his journey as the character. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show,” the actor bared his heart out about his MCU career. He said of the ending of season 2:
“It’s the conclusion to season 2 and seasons 1 and 2. It’s also a conclusion to six films, 12 episodes, and 14 years of my life. I was cast when I was 29; now I am 43.”
Many of his fans have interpreted his words to mean that he is done playing the character. There seems to be a finality to his words as well. However, nothing has been confirmed by Marvel Studios yet.
Can Loki Return in Season 3?
As for now, Loki season 3 hasn’t been officially announced. But fans think it’s possible because Loki is the first MCU show post-Endgame to be awarded a season 2. However, it’s best to reign in expectations because season 2 wasn’t written with another season in mind.
Loki’s head writer, Eric Martin, revealed to CinemaBlend:
“We approached this as like two halves of a book. Season one, first half. In season two, we close the book on Loki and the TVA. Where it goes beyond that, I don’t know. I just wanted to tell a full and complete story across those two seasons.”
It’s now a wait-and-watch to see where or if Loki will appear next.
Where will we get to see Loki next? Will it be Avengers: Kang Dynasty? Or has Tom Hiddleston’s run as Loki has come to an end now?
