Buggy is a fantastic character in One Piece who elevates the hilarity of the series every time he appears on the screen or on a manga panel.
However, despite all the lucky encounters he has gotten so far, there seems to be no end as he’s officially become a Yonko now, which is a hard pill to swallow for many fans.
So, how did Buggy become a Yonko in One Piece? Well, Buggy owed a lot of money to Crocodile since the East Blue Saga, and to save his life, the former offered advertisements to the Cross Guild. However, his subordinates placed Buggy in the dead center, and the World Government mistook him as the leader by assuming that both Crocodile and Mihawk were working for him. Thus, Buggy became an Emperor with a three billion berry bounty.
Debunked: How Did Buggy Become a Yonko?
Buggy didn’t become a Yonko overnight—well, he did, but there are a lot of coincidences involved in his unexpected fortune.
For one, he was associated with many strong pirates, including Shanks, Gol D. Roger, and Crocodile. Since the East Blue Saga, he was notorious for being one of the deadliest pirates, but in reality, he was nothing more than a clown.
As we stated, pure coincidences are what made people afraid of him; likewise, he was eventually recognized as a threat to the World Government. But that wasn’t the end.
During the Impel Down arc, although Buggy only wanted to escape the prison and stay far away from Crocodile, he was involuntarily dragged into the battle, but it was another turning point.
Once the war ended, everyone believed that Buggy was the one who initiated the escape plan of Impel Down prison, leading to his name spreading across all the nations in One Piece.
After a long time has passed, the World Government has decided to hunt the Warlords of the Sea, leading to Crocodile and Mihawk working together by creating the Cross Guild.
When Crocodile found Buggy, he wanted to collect the money he owed, but the latter offered services to promote the Cross Guild instead. Funnily enough, Buggy’s subordinates had a different purpose in mind.
They believed that Buggy had recruited both Crocodile and Mihawk into his crew; thus, they created posters with Buggy in the middle, leading people to assume Buggy was a big shot.
The World Government eventually decided to raise Buggy’s bounty to 3 billion berries and declared him one of the Emperors of the Sea alongside Luffy, Shanks, and Blackbeard.
The most ironic thing about all these incidents is that Buggy never wanted to do any of these things, yet somehow, he was placed at the center of things. Furthermore, he was unhappy being described as a Yonko because now everyone would try to hunt him down.
